i personaly think that the state transport departments need to introduce a special scheme to reduce the rego for the special modern cars that are not used on a daily basis, similar to club rego

cool idea, the rich guy that can afford the Lambo or Porsche GT2 gets cut price rego to support his flamboyance while the working class guy that loves his V8 ute gets the greasy pole, I think not.

No harm in a thought.
Most states have this sort of rego, club rego. Limits the use of the car to club events only and the car may not be used outside of these times. If they would like to rego their Bugatti Veyron on club rego, that is fine they can do it, if not they can get robbed in rego payments like the rest of us do.

I was thinking because i have a few friends that have an EB GT, BA GT-P and an NL FBT and they dont have the money to register the cars. They dont use these cars on a daily basis but it seems such a waste to have these nice cars and only drive them once every so often on the weekend if you know what i mean?

An idea would be to have a limited use rego, say for vehicles that don't travel more than 5-10k a year.
Seems a lot more fair that way and easy to police. Specify that you only use it for 10k a year and when rego time comes up go to Vicroads and show your odometer. If it's 10k or under all good, over 10k you need to pay the difference of the previous year before you can renew.

Tas certainly does have limited use vehicle rego.
Cars are identified with "SI"**** number plates. Very common down here. It is a lot cheaper than normal rego.

The problem is how do you police the usage, I have a FPV and a turbo Mini, both would fit the type of car but we use them both daily. What would stop me using the limited use rego and the still using them every day. Pain in the butt to police

Maybe provide a discount for every other car which is registered in your name?
Eg. 1st Daily. 100% of rego 2nd 80% of rego etc.... just a thought.... |

Club rego is too restrictive if you want to go for a drive on your own. My thoughts is perhaps the TAC insurance should be on the drivers licence rather than the vehicle(s). After all its the driver thats the risk, and therefore should carry the insurance. The car just goes where the driver steers it. Then the cars would be charged just the rego component. Can't see that happening though. |

well they do have the money to register their cars but it is getting to much, prices keeps on going up they have other cars to drive around then their special. Yes their cars are registered, but what iam trying to say is it is getting too much for people to keep on affording these rare and special cars, i think a NL FBT is special may be not to you or me but the owner !, i think that is a brillant suggestion offer multi vehicle discounts ?

Whether the car is rare or not should have no influence on rego costs IMO.

I think the point has been missed by some. If you own more than one car then the second rego should be cheaper but this can't be monitored because someone else could be driving it. I reckon rego should be free and a small charge should be added to fuel to compensate. This way people who use a lot of fuel pay a lot of rego and people who drive their car very little pay a small rego. This will never happen but it is nice to think about.
Cheers Keith

I agree with IEATSPORTS and GECKO, but there has to be a better way, i had 4 cars, hack ute (for sale), nice ute (replacement), Familily sedan, and the old family wagon ( keeping it for the young fella to turn 18, with only one lic driver in the house the REGO is a killer !!!!!!
DBIRDY and SILER GHIA have the best ideas ive heard of in a long time, maybe the RTA could even look at number of registered cars at an address Vs the number of lic drivers ???? More cars less/reduced Fees .

My sister drives to and from work everyday and drives all around creating havoc and she wouldnt even clock up 10,000km/year. Down here the SI vehicles have to have a log book detailing the hours, it doesnt get checked except if you get pulled over and the officer asks for it, its too easy to lie in it so people do. Something like this for newer cars would be great but itd never work, too hard to police (people would just wind back their odo/get a new cluster) and there would be heaps of people against it purely because they would miss out and then comes the "well if I cant have it noone should". There isnt really any reason the no rego/higher fuel prices wouldnt work, itd convince more people to walk/public transport and thats what the government is trying to do anyway, plus with the money they would make from trucks/work cars still burning it that could be put into getting LPG prices down so people would be convinced to convert. Sounds good to me.

In Vic, rego isn't the main cost, the third party insurance is (CTP). All up, out of about $600 per year, $460ish is the CTP. The rest is the rego fee and GST.
If it was just a $140 ish rego fee per year that would be fine, but paying all that extra CTP per vehicle isn't. The real alternative is to charge all licence holders the CTP, not the vehicle. A licence holder can only drive one vehicle at a time, regardless of how many they own, and a vehicle can only be driven by a licenced driver, who would then automatically be covered by insurance. As a licence holder, if you can't afford the $400 per year to have your licence, then perhaps you shouldn't be driving, like all the deadbeats who don't have third party vehicle insurance on their rides. Seems logical to me. I'll wait for you guys to pick it to pieces. |

Ok, how about this idea. Rego should be charged as a percentage of the vehicle age.
Eg. A brand new to 5 year old car would be charged at 100%, which i guess the majority of our daily drivers are at least 5 years old. and for our hobby car / project car / crusing car / street machine being around the 1960's era, knock 40% off the price since it is 40 years old? This old would only work if the old car is our street machine.... |
