Hi guys,
Yesterday I asked peoples opinions of Hyundai Accents, I am now considering a VW Golf. For the same price that I can get a 2007 Accent with about 70,000kms on it, I can get my neighbours 2001 GTI turbo golf with sunroof, alloys, full recaro interior, climate control, Bose stereo, 1 owner with full books and rwc. The Golf has 145,000kms on it, my neighbour says that it gets about 7L/100 on average. I reckon that the Golf would be a much better car, has anyone had much to do with Golfs and what sort of kms would I expect to get out of it before having problems?? Cheers, Greg.

the two golfs i looked after during my time as mechanic, both had no significant issues, most annoying thing was it kept breaking the oil dip stick loop. other than that i would take the golf over a accent any day, the quality is way superior

If you want to drive around in something a bit classier and with more enjoyment, go the Golf. Better build quality. It will probably feel newer than the Accent.
Accent would be better for running costs with the warranty. |

I had a Golf like the one your looking at, fantastic car, much better than the Hyundai. Just check what insurance is going to cost you as it will be alot dearer than that Hyundai, also get windscreen coverage as they are work 1k in these things, found that out the hard way! Keep in mind it will give u good economy but uses premium fuel. If there is anything else u wanna know pm me.

i would take the golf with out even thinking ,i work on a few of these cars at work and the only problem i have had with them is that because they are a vw parts take a little longer to get in but vw are pertty cheap on sevice parts, so all i do is ask my custmers to come a day early and let me quickly look at sevice componets then do it the next day or few days later when parts are avablie

That model GTi was pretty lame from what I understand.

Be careful with the Golf, get a check on it, it will be expensive is something goes on it. Maybe look at buying an aftermarket warranty for it? I think something will go wrong on the VW before the Accent honestly.

Wow, I never thought anybody would compare a VW GTi to an Accent. Man, the golf, even though its older, is leagues ahead!

That series of Golf needs the timing belt changed every 4 years or 60K kms, whichever is sooner. As the car is now 8 years old, I would be wanting to see a receipt from the seller to show this has been done either recently or at 120K kms. Not much change from $1000 for this.
The Golf is a quality car, and at the opposite end of the quality spectrum from the Accent, but find yourself a good non-dealer VW specialist and check out the forums at http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=137 MK |

Like chalk and cheese. The Golf is a lot more refined. Not the quickest car (egas will take it), but still a great car.

The Golf is a better choice in every way. Check the history and make sure it's been serviced at the specified intervals. These cars can be expensive to fix if they're not looked after. But on saying that, parts for Hyundai's aren't cheap either.
The only other thing I'd be checking out (as said above), is the insurance cost. Also, the VW should hold it's value better than the Accent too. Best of luck with whatever you choose.
