Hey all,
Recently my 2000 AU1 xr6 has been having some dramas up the front of the car. At times when driving along the steering wheel will start to shudder heavily, when i pull over to check things the front arches smell like they do when under very heavy braking (burning smell).This is a tempromental problem and only occurs now and then. I jacked up my car the other night and the front wheels were very heavy to turn. There is still plenty of meat on the brake pads and under regular braking the steering wheel does not shudder. I do not hear any noises of interest when driving along so I am unsure whats going on? I am thinking that this may be an issue with the brakes? Anyone had this experience? |

mine will shudder every once in a while and on occasions when stopping at traffic lights the steering wheel will pull to the left in the last 15 metres or so of stopping, smells like brakes aswell
|

It sounds like the caliper slides are starting to seize up. Pull them apart and grease them up. Should fix the problem

A wheel alignment fixes everything, when it comes to front end issues. This includes any little noises. Please read the manual carefully, as the these manufacturers spent millions of dollars making sure it is perfect.....Now why are there so many problems with my car, when I follow the instructions to the letter?....Answer, majority rules round here Lock me up and throw away the key because I'm a hoon....I got caught doing 59 in a 60 zone |

As SVO said the caliper slides or the actual pistons will be sticking
With the car jacked up the wheels should spin freely by hand with a just slight rubbing noise, if you need 2 hands to turn them they are stuck on |

The shudder has been comming and going and has been happening while no braking is occuring. The problem got progressively worse the last day, i am pretty sure the front left caliper is stuck on. I have taken it the mechanic, so hopefully its not an expensive fix...
