Are there any websites around to get performance parts for old rally cars like escorts and whatnot? I live in a small town, and how the previous owners of my car got its engine parts is beyond me.

whereabouts are you? there are a few places dotted about the country. if you are in WA, you could try Racetune. otherwise, try Burtons in the UK. they have everything you could ever need.

Exchange rate is still pretty good. Some parts arrive cheaper to my door than purchasing in Oz...when you can find them locally.
AND......the planes are flying again !! (awaiting parts...grumble gruumble..) |

As Allan said, exchange rates are good at the moment. besides, anyone you buy parts from here will have got them from the UK themselves. I havent dealt with Burtons myself via mail order, but have heard they are good. Try Classic Ford Forum for some ideas and contacts for Escorts as that site is devoted to small Fords.

I'm not even sure exactly what parts i should be getting. I've got a race cam, bored to 2.2, port polished, larger extractors, machined carb, racing clutch. What should i be after next?

BradZ, what sort of racing are you planning on? and what location are you in. My 12 year old son races a Mk2, 4 door rally Escort, with a 2 litre worked engine in Dirt Circuit racing and is doing well in adult competition, 1st overall yesterday class of 8 cars. 4 x 6 lap races, 940 m track.
The engine was set up in NSW but I can find out info for you. Cheers, Les |

Found a cold air intake setup on burtons for cheap, would it be worth it/practical? If so, how do i mount it and how much performance gain would i get?

My 12 year old sons car is as follows from what I have been able to check, 1976 Ford Escort Mk2 4 Door 4sp manual w/ Pinto -Engine- remains 2 litre. No 4 race cam Head shaved 60 thou. Ported Polished to extremes including shaving the valve guides Rally clutch Rally gearbox, very short shift. 3.7 Diff, removed original 3.5. Removed the Pacemaker extractors which gave higher revs and put on Advance, these seem to give more low down power out of corners. only lose about 450 rpm. Twin throat Webber carb. Our Cortina runs a 350 Holley, definitely helps. Standard ignition but will install electronic as soon as I can get the gear, this does let it down. -Interior- Removed original guages and dash 6 point rollcage RCI 5 point Racing harness and sliding seat. I have slowed the car down from original but gets away much quicker. Still pulls amazing revs and though being one of the smallest engines in the class, is without doubt the quickest. She is getting a bit battered at present but all dents are curtesy of other competitors. One prang cost 80 hours work, four more since. I now have 8 donor cars for parts which are getting hard to find in a hurry when needed. About to start building a new body ready to transfer the running gear. Also have 3 more worked engines and gearboxes waiting on standby. My wife races a 2 litre TD Cortina nearly as quick but not quite. Cheers and have fun with the Escort. Les. |

Hi Bradz, you can try SMAKA (http://www.smckaperformance.com.au/) He gets alot of stuff from the UK at reasonable prices, He can also source parts for you if he doesnt have what you want. Hes very helpfull & know what hes talking about. |

Bradz
the first thing I would be looking into is the braking & suspension setup on your car - a good horsepower motor is next to useless if you cant get it to the ground, go round corners or stop..... AutoX is timed single car racing so any mods can be easily tried & tested to see what improvement you get Like Les noted changing the diff ratio is an easy improvement which is cheap & will increase the acceleration between corners, is the diff locked? what ratio is it? a locked 3.9 or 4.11 are easily available & cheap, 4.4 get a bit harder to get. I use a 4.89 and never run out of legs on any Auto X track in Vic - about the only one I havent raced at is Swan Hill With good brakes & suspension you will see faster results in decreased lap times learning how to stop & corner over increased power Does it have an adjustable pedal box? |

Yeahh, um i'll be honest i'm a cheap *** and i'm after cheap engine mods really. The racing i do is just for fun against other random cars, no prize money or nothing. I can't afford to deck out the suspension and whatnot, i'd just like a bit more punch out of my engine.
As for the diff, i'm not sure about the ratio and no it isn't locked. Tried that and it just blew it to pieces in the first 15 minutes. A rough guess but i dont think the car goes over 140 if that helps??
