Default NSW Govt Practically Admits Speeding Fines are for Revenue

http://www.themotorreport.com.au/504...to-570-million

Quote:
Beginning on July 19, New South Wales will begin rolling out its mobile speed camera program, replacing the state's outdated cameras with new digital systems capable not only detecting speed, but also of reading number plates.
As part of the NSW Government's budget announced this week, the mobile speed cameras are expected to contribute to an increase in fine revenue from $291 million in 2009 to $428 million by next year. Under the budget forecast, last year's take will have almost doubled to $570 million by 2012.
On their own, the mobile speed cameras - which will be operated by a private company - are expected to increase the number of speeding tickets by 5 percent, adding about $137 million to fine revenue.
Speaking with News Ltd, Opposition roads spokesperson Andrew Stoner said that the expected increase in revenue was a clear revenue-raising tactic, using speed cameras to grow the state's budget rather than deter speeding motorists.
"This means the state's fiscal position now relies on more motorists speeding on our roads," Mr Stoner said. "Speed cameras should be there to deter motorists from driving dangerously, not to raise revenue."
. .The NSW Government also announced that it will inject a further $11 million into paying police officers, amounting to a pay rise of nearly 2 percent - described by Opposition police spokesperson Mike Gallacher as "insignificant".
Most significantly, the NSW Government announced a $300 million increase in road development, increasing the state's spend on its roads to $4.7 billion.
Around $810 million has been earmarked for the Pacific Highway (up $147 million on last year) and $115 million for the Great Western Highway (up $47m).
Can someone explain how this adds up:

If speeding fines are only going to increase by 5% which generated $291 mil in 2009, that would mean it will only add an extra $14 mil... So how could 5% add an extra $137 mil to revenue unless fines will increase?

I heard Eric Roozendahl say in an interview this morning that fines are going to increase. Best thing we can do is allow a little more time for our journeys and make sure we don't speed. I know it is an incredibly hard thing to do, I'm going to have to watch everything I do.
Further, if I have a nose to tail accident as a result of speedo gazing then I will send the bill to the RTA and the NSW legislature. Unsatisfactory response and I'll lodge my claim in local court to recover damages, costs and demorrage. Worked on the councils, hopefully it will work against those who have legislated that we spend more time watching our speedo's than the environment in which we travel; a reprehensible and blatant endangerment of motorists in the name of government revenue streams, and the latest budgetary forecasts released yesterday reveal how the punishment is about revenue and not at all about safety.

All due respect LTD, If you have a "nose to tail" because you are "speedo gazing", lodge your claim with the people who "taught" you to drive. I know it's "an incredibly hard thing to do" but ,yes, you are going to have watch everything you do.... you are on the road, and that's exactly what you have to do when you are "on the road"!!!

because they dont need anybody sitting on a fat government salary reading the numberplates from these photos anymore!! not only do the new digital speed cameras generate revenue, they cut cost too obviously

Hopefully this news will get a bit more publicity. This is getting ridiculous!
How can they possibly let mobile speed camera's out onto the roads. These have absolutely nothing to do with detering speeders and dangerous drivers, they have no place on our roads from a safety point of view and something should be done to remove them..
Why do NSWalians continue to keep voting in Labor governments!! Why won't the rest of us learn!!

And you expect the opposition to stop using them revenue generating cameras????

Until people learn to stop thinking "their" party will do better (or whoever), nothing will ever change. Voting someone else in does not stop the rot.

And the usual standard moronic responce from you too... to a comment which wasnt even directed at yourself.

I have NOT ONCE said who I vote for, and you know why... WHO REALLY FRIGGING CARES! Your assumptions are typical of a narrowmind person with blinkers on, unable to fathem the idea that a person who hates political parties is obviously a labour party supporter, a socialist or a commie...
Please add some other pathetic insult like you usually do.

Every year they put out a figure for fine revenue and it increases each year.

So this is nothing new.

The QLD coppers refer to speeding fines as 'voluntary taxes'.

Also, in b4 'don't want a fine, don't speed zomg'

So now we wait for SA, WA, NT and TAS to admit whilst having a seperate thread for each one and we'll have a complete set.

It's all been said before in 2 threads over the last fews months do we really need to go over it again?

The moment that they factored in speeding fines into the budget, they lost all credibility in suggesting speed cameras weren't about revenue raising.

One thing I do welcome is number plate reading, particularly if they're coupled with mobile police who can pick up unregistered, stolen, questionable vehicles. Have seen how they're effectively used in the UK on various cop reality TV shows and I'd like to see them used here in the same manner.

It appears we are more interested in a political slanging match than another speed camera thread number 521.

no speeding on the return though or Russellw will zap you with his speed camera..
