Post Tail light tinting spray and headlights

Hey guys,

How legal is this spray? The one that makes your tail lights darker, but still transparent? Some people have told me any of it is illegal, and some others have said it's fine as long as you can see the lights from at least 50m away...so what's right?

I don't want to have to get new tail lights/new roadworthy if they're too dark/illegal.

Also, are H4 90 (or 95, i'm not sure)/100W bulbs legal in a 2000 AUII Fairmont? Or will they be too bright and just annoy everyone else on the road? I just saw them when I was replacing one of my stock bulbs that blew.

Cheers oh wise ones

i did my tail lights by going to a auto parts shop and having them mix a spray pack of clear with some black tint in it. worked great. i have had cops follow me and never been pulled over.

Awesome thanks. I got some off a mate who bought it for his EL, saved me the 30 or 40 bucks haha. Good to know about taking it off as well, I thought it might have been something a bit tougher.

Any ideas on the headlight bulbs?

Ah it isn't that easy to get off at all. turps barely get it off and even then it will look ****, i had to get a scouring pad out to get it all off then of course that ruined the tail lights so went and got a new pair from the wreckers. IMO only looks good on white or black cars. anything else and i'd keep the stock ones.

The standard AU bulbs are pretty good, but you can go the Plus 50 or plus 80s (These are rated in terms of light output, but are still the standard 55W/65W H4s). I wouldn't go for the 95W ones though, as you are likely to melt or discolour the polycarbonate lens.

On the topic of headlights, what JC says is correct

Agreed - though a "light tint" can look quite good and the taillights can still be seen. Still, I wouldn't like to be in an accident where someone's run up the rear of me with tinted taillights; I'd expect the insurance company would refuse the claim straight away.

That was 2 coats of tail light tint from super cheap auto in 2007, doesn't look as dark now, can still see my tail lights quite clearly... i think it looks pretty good, for some stupid reason i tried to do my headlights a slight bit.. it reacted with the plastic and sort of bubbled... which was probably a good thing because i got some new ones and sprayed the bezals white which looks great...

Cheers Cam

I don't particularly mind the look of tinted taillights, but tinting any of the indication signals (stop, tail, turn) or headlights is illegal - they won't conform to the ADRs they were specced under as the colour of the light will change, and hence you no longer have any ADR approved lighting.
