Default About time 'Keepleft'

Heard on Aunty today that Qld police are going to enforce the keepleft rule on our roads in particular the Bruce hwy. The penalty is a $60.00 fine and two points. They are fed up with the complaints of tailgateing and the accidents that are caused by the idiots.

About time a government decided to enforce this law. Victoria won't see any proactive measures on this issue unless you drive a heavy vehicle on the geelong freeway or soon eastlink.

I'm starting to think the governments should come together and set out a set of national road rules in lieu of the current system. (Just a thought)

This needs to be enforced everywhere. I think half the people on the road have never heard of keeping left. Maybe being stung $60 a few times will get the message across better than people tailgating them and flashing their lights.

One law...... yadda yadda. When i was returning from Albury to Brisbane earlier this year there was a marked HWP SS that came up behind me, i was doing about 112KPH he passed me and sat about 2 car lengths ahead of me in the right lane for a good 15-20mins dunno what his deal was.
But yes this is a step forward as IMO it is VERY prevelant on the M1

lol see if that was in Vic they'd give you a fine for the right lane, have a speed camera operator hidden behind a Wattle bush on the left then a parking inspector runs out and gives you a ticket while the copper is writing out your fine on the side of the road

It is somewhat already enforced here, my cousin was issued a fine last December on the Hume highway for not keeping left.
I suppose while they are not out actively looking for it, they will enforce the rule should they stumble across someone not obeying it.

That would imply that Queensland has an able bodied Police force. Not just Constable Kodak. Where do these mythical creatures you speak of exist?

Oh, is this something to do with a pay rise issue??

They will probably just book the frustrated people sitting behind the lane hogs for tail-gating instead!

Well it was the lead story on ch10 and ch7 news, there will be a 14 day warning period then its game on for all infringements in the right hand lane.

They had interviews with a few ppl and the majority didn't know about the rule. How could they not know its part of the testing isn't it,theres even signs on the roads...'keep left unless overtaking...etc'

Anyway lets hope they really do start fining these idiots.

There are here in SA, but a lot of people don't realise that the rule is keep left unless overtaking in areas where the speed limit is above 80km/h, even if it's not signposted.

Looks like it's Australia wide:

Fantastic idea.

Now if we could just do it Australia wide as others have said.

Just tonight was in the left lane of Lonsdale highway plodding along at just over the speed limit (speedo reading about 85, 80km/h zone), being tailgated by a VN just because he couldn't get over because there was a clown in the right lane hugging my blind spot. He should have got over and let the VN get past so he wasn't riding my bum! In the end I sped up a little so he could get around me, naughty naughty I know but should there have been any cameras they would have got him the speed he took off at!

fantastic idea. put them on the M5 and Eastern distributor in sydney as well, then we might even get something that resembles traffic flow (similar to when i go to work at 4am )

but $60 thats nothing, you can get a carton of bundy cans for that if you use your woolies staff discount. make the fine $600 and 3 points and then watch the donkeys move to the left.

betchya they are only doing it because they believe right lane hogs are causing a drop in speed camera revenue............

As if they would do anything that actually makes traffic flow better on purpose

You know what, i think as a general rule of thumb, people stick to the keep left unless overtaking quite well OUTSIDE built-up areas
If I'm on the bruce from the start, people are terrible until I pass caboolture or thereabouts. Once it's after that, people are generally very good.

we have an 'enforced' keep left rule in WA. nobody pays any attention to it anyway because to enfore it, you need policemen in police cars. these are not nearly as cost effective as a camera.

nice idea though.

About time, sick of the monkeys who take up the right lane and sit 10-15kp/h below the posted limit along side another car doing the same thing - no way to get around and just causes a pile up of cars behind you.

I want to believe it will help, and I really hope it does, but my my we have some terrible drivers. I'm no angel, but I personally like the caravans who sit in the right hand lane, with everyone doing a sort of snake to the left lane, then back into the right to avoid the car in the left lane so carefully positioned to be going the SAME SPEED as the caravan.

Even when I've gone to pass on the right, the person in the left speeds up, by which stage someone is behind them, and someone is behind me, forcing me to either A. Wait for "Brocky the second" in his turbo VL to fly in front of me from the left hand lane at full noise and quickly sneak back into the left, or B. break the speed limit to get past the clown who sped up. Now in this instance, do I speed up and get done for aggressivly overtaking, or do I get fined for hogging the right lane?

If all else fails, I guess I could follow the example a VR statesman commodore set; If both lanes are blocked, bury your foot and unleash the full potential of your 5L engine... swerve to the side and gun it up the breakdown lane, and as a precaution, remember to put your sunnies on because that flash is bright ;)

I know someone who got booked for driving too long in the right lane. Problem is, how do they decide how long is "too long"? How do they determine if the time you spend in the right lane is "excessive"? Seems like the answer depends on the officer who does the booking.
