Default RTA plans 40 more mobile speed cameras for NSW

RTA plans 40 more mobile speed cameras for NSW
By Brett Davis | November 1st, 2010

The RTA and mobile speed camera contractors are about to launch 40 more covert speed cameras in NSW. This is a massive increase on the $2.1 million Redflex contract currently underway, which only operates six mobile camera cars.

It doesn’t take a mathematics genius to figure out the cost of such an operation, which will be paid for using tax-payer’s money of course. The most annoying and frustrating part is there’s going to be a new ‘seven step’ incentive program which offers commission-like bonuses for the contractors based on the number of tickets they issue – key performance indicator (KPI).

An RTA spokesman recently told The Daily Telegraph,

“Contractors can earn up to 11 per cent more if performing perfectly on all KPIs and could be deducted 14 per cent if KPIs are not met.”

Reports say other incentives include; bonuses based on the quality of the images taken of the speeding drivers as well as how fast the tickets can be filed to the RTA. Meeting these ideal requirements, as said, will give contractors the chance to pocket up to 11 percent more income per month.

So, the government is paying contractors, using our money, to buy ‘action shots’ in a buy-and-sell money-making scheme for maximum profit. And it is ‘profit’, this is no longer between the RTA and the police (government organisations), this is now external trading. One cannot begin to exhaust how ridiculous this is in just a single breath.

It’s no longer a matter of whether or not speed cameras are a revenue raising exercise instead of an initiative setup to save lives; it’s now down to the projected revenue the cameras can potentially raise, like a business forecast. Proctor Law defence lawyer, Peter Proctor, was quoted as saying in the Telegraph report,

“It is disturbing to note that these operators are on an incentive scheme. This is now a money-making business at the expense of the people.”

The 40 new mobile cameras are planned to be in operation by July, 2011.

What do we need to do to legally overthrow the Government? I mean, a revolution, mutiny or whatever you want to call it. Its about we did something.

**** those ****s

Lets do something about this ******** it's going to far.
They could spend that money on fixing roads and maybe setting up driver training centres, but those things do not bring in money.

And the operators will make money for their fines??? Oh those guys thought they were being hassled before, imagine how people will act towards them now.

Oh man it gets better n better. Deadset, people we must do somthing now, lets set a date, lets go protest, lets be heard.
It really has now come to the point where its becoming intolerable. Unfortunatly the people in the country are happy to just take it lying down instead of fighting against it. (i havent heard of any action against any of GovCo's moves...)
Remember, many men died for the democracy we live under and it takes the voice of a whole nation to be heard.

I am up for it. I just don't know what the best method of protest is though.
Maybe we should get an online petition with thousands of signatures of people who is sick of the governments revenue raising.
I don't know any ideas people?

Maybe we should all drive around in a massive convoy at 20km/h, holding up traffic so no one will be going fast enough to get fined.

I remember truckies saying they were going to do that down the F3 if the price of diesel hit the $2 mark.

Forget online protests........no value what so ever.

There are rumblings around...........whirlpool forums has a bit of a head of steam up for a Spring St protest at the moment.........might be time to keep rallying the troops and actually get something done

Online petitions dont do anything.
Driving around at 20kmph will bound to anger alot of people plus it wouldent be fair for those who need the roads to work or get to work.

Didnt the truckies already do that though? Only on the left lane of the F3?

Maybe use the areas around the parliment as a car park and rally up aoutside with signs and a megaphone, the old fashioned way. Either way, actually getting up and doing somthing is the key. GovCo wont care about 500 signatures, they wont care about 600 letters, they will somwhat care about 500 angry people on their doorstep.

You'd have the greenies outside trying to fine you for carbon emissions faster than a police baton at the g20 summit

Ok so the new mobile cameras have been out for a few months now..... lets see proven statistics of how the crash rate has dramatically been cut............ what no proof? what a surprise. I bet they have stats on how much extra money they are making though.

Voting isnt the answer either, unless more than 1/2 the state is with you. All politicians want the revenue, wait let me rephrase, they all need the revenue as they have very few other income sources, someone sold most of it off. So no party is going to remove them. Something more is needed to make it an issue at election time to get them to promise to revoke them as part of their campaign, so they can break that promise afterwards. To even reach that poor state of affairs, you need enough support for an opposition to take heed. Good luck getting people to back it.

My point, its all just like a dog barking at cars. Brumby and others might be the ones installing them, but they arent the ones who made them necessary for revenue.

FMC351, your post would have to be one of the most accurate and intelligent comments made on this forum regarding speed cameras that I have seen in a long time. Good on you.

Problem is car enthusiasts are a minority. Average Joe thinks speed cameras are a good idea because he gets a free ride and does not pay the extra tax that would be passed down if there were no speed cameras. Dont Speed, Dont Pay guys on their high horses are the majority and elections would see very few voting one way or another because of speed cameras.
What i dont understand is that this is a country of "Tuff Aussies" and yet nothing is done to the actual cameras them selves. The UK cameras are always on fire or full of expanding foam and in the States Hank just gets out his gun. The mobile cameras get attacked as well.

Until they get in to Victoria's position where a quarter of your population are at the brink of losing their licence.

Just passed one of the new ones here in Brisbane, they don't have to display a damn thing indicating they are speed cameras, and apart from the checker plate toolboxes under the tray they are virtually invisible at night.

How in the hell is this not a blatant grab for cash!?

Easy done, go and threaten the transport minister. In a very short time you will be taken to a place where you can use you fist of fury on a very regular basis.

Don't get mad, get even. You have an election soon, make your vote count and get out and tell as many as you can to do the same.

I find the concept of speed cameras a very agitating. Tax-payer funded devices, designed to take money off tax-payers who are using a mode of transport that already is one of the most taxed things in the country.
