Thumbs down Stolen car crashed into Raby Bay Canal ...

Thieves crash car in canal, try to steal another...

MARISSA CALLIGEROS OF BRISBANETIMES.COM.AU
23 Dec, 2010 01:11 PM

Two thieves who crashed a stolen car into a Raby Bay canal off Mastehead Drive, Cleveland early this morning tried to steal another car to flee police, it is believed.
The two men, believed to be aged in their early 20s, stole the luxury Holden Special Vehicle GTS Commodore and other property, including two expensive guitars, from a house in Birkdale, before going on a joy ride in Raby Bay.

But the men's plans went awry when they crashed the car into a canal along Masthead Drive, about 4am.

The duo managed to escape the sinking vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Inspector Peter Harding said police on patrol had earlier spotted the men driving around Raby Bay streets, but had not pursued them.

"They hit the water at some considerable speed," he said.

"It was neighbours who alerted police to the car in the canal.

"We caught up with one of the men about 10 minutes later, as he tried to [run] through two backyards. We are now in the process of interviewing him."

Inspector Harding said it was believed the man may have tried to steal another car before he was arrested.

"We have not been able to confirm that yet, but I would not be surprised," he said.

The second man managed to elude police in the dark.

The battered Holden GTS, which was completely submerged in the canal, was fished out by a crane this morning.

"We have also seized an amount of stolen property, including the two very expensive guitars," Inspector Harding said.

The car, which can produce 435 horsepower, is believed to have been worth between $70,000 and $100,000 ...

Holden or not the pics would break your heart if it was yours , according to Boostlosers the owner mistreated this car and had no respect for it ...

I feel sorry for the owners of this car. It'd be nice for the owner/s to be able to deal out their own form of justice to the low life that did this.

Yay i finally agree with you .... keeping it real though, it looks like the owner is getting a NEW hsv out of it to go with his others......so they are not technically without a car ... but i do agree with you all the same.

Agreed.

People can spend their money however they want.
The GTS in its own right is a nice car and the owner has every right to enjoy it.

When you earn your own money, nobody has a right to tell you how you are to spend it.

Those kids will have high insurance premiums in the future, and given their criminal history, will not be as employable (certainly not a job that involves valuable goods, handling large amounts of cash, or a courtesy vehicle), and I hope will be ostracised by their peer group.

I hope this experience turns them into better people and they grow up.

To the owner of the car - we're all sorry to hear about it - ignore the grunts.

Guys let's ease up a bit on the model bashing. This could just as easily have been a GT. Noone really understands what makes a thieves mind tick, & I for one hope that the law treats the criminals with the respect they deserve - ie make them pay for the car, the recovery costs, and the wages of all those that had to work at rectifying their "5 minutes of fun"

Sadly they'll use the old "deprived childhood" and "society has abandoned me" defence, get a slap on the wrists, a suspended sentence and bond, and be out doing it again in a couple of weeks.

where were the keys????? not that hard to steal any car once you're in a house, grabbing guitars and the keys from the front table perhaps?
thats why i spend half an hour thinking where i hid my own keys to my shed and car......

what a waste of a nice car, and this time of year, has to suck for sure.

IMO they most likely got the keys when they broke into the house as its not easy to bypass the immobiliser systems on the latest HSV/FPV cars.

P.s I need to type faster, 2 similar posts by the time I replied.

The other part of the suffering on the owners behalf, is their insurance premiums (assuming it was insured) will increase. They will also have to pay the excess because of the low lives.

Really nice christmas for them.

Feel sorry for the owner, but one would hope they are well insured. These gits have no respect for other peoples property and that makes me angry.

I actually live near there and that happened back in the 23rd of December and I haven't even heard anything about it until now! I might check that area out later to see exactly where it happened.

I hope the scumbags responsible get locked away for a long long time and the owners should be given a new car for free.

Entirely agree with Wulos here. It's a shame some people just don't understand to leave well enough alone (with regards to the car and other items).

Wow, HSV or not shame to see it happen thats for sure, as has been said it's hard to stop scum like this when they break into your house, steal other items then take your pride and joy on the way out..

This is why my car and shed keys are always kept away from one another and most the time i'll just take the keys with me.

The sad reality is that the fear of jail will not deter some people...
In fact, life at "home" with the "family" may actually be the hell they're trying to escape from. All of a sudden, a quiet cell with 3 meals a day and no constant screaming sounds pretty good all of a sudden...
When people get desperate enough and depressed enough, not even capital punishment with deter.
