Default Why do people buy XTs and then add fairmont/XR bits?

Why is it that people go out and buy the base model of cars such as a ba falcon xt but over time try and transform them into a fairmont/ghia, xr or even fpv models?

For instance i see too many xt's/futuras getting around with fairmont chrome garnish or grill, xr rear bumpers (even fronts), fairmont icc units with premium sound/climate control, moulds suddenly colour coded, wheels from another model (almost acceptable). Sometimes even seats.

On my street there is a ba xt with full fpv kit and wing, stripes, duel side oval exhausts and its a i6 with taxi pack interior? Some silly chrome wheels and they think its a hot car?

If you want the more upmarket or sporty model, why not just buy it in the first place? The cost and time of mucking around would suggest its the better option.

Also if i was to buy a used car and in the market for a base model, i would buy a stock car over the many spare parts bin specials out there.

Cuz they can only afford the cost of base model at the time, not hard to beleive I wouldn't think.
There's a fair price difference between a 2nd hand ex-fleet XT and GT.

Because thats all they can afford at the time or they get bored with it.
Agree though because some mock up xr6's/fpv b series just look dog ugly and the owners should be ashamed.

Why do people modify xr6's and xr8's when they can just buy a Ferrari?

Why do people buy old cars and restore them to anything other than factory spec?? Because we can!!

I don't really see what point you are trying to make Hulk BA?

As many have said, maybe people can not afford a more expensive car. Maybe they are new into that model car and didn't notice any other modifications until AFTER they bought it.

People modify cars all the time....across all models.

Cause they look awesome. Just the front bar nothing else.

Base model falcons can look good with an FPV bodykit if done properly. If not, it looks stupid and as said above, the owners should be ashamed.

Everyones different and some have differing opinions on mods. As already said, not everyone can afford their first choice of car and some just prefer to customize their base spec Falcon, nothing wrong with that as long as the owner gets enjoyment out of their car the way they want it.

'cos its their car!

I do see your point though to a degree, if you are going to go nuts buying all FPV bits and painting all items, spoilers, wheels etc etc, you may have well have bought one in the first place.

A lot of these cars that have XR8 and GT kits are P platers cars. P platers can not drive high powered cars so they go buy a XT and pimp it out. What is so bad about that. At least they following the law and not buying a XR8 GT.

Plus as people have said, the cost. 2003 BA XT, $7000, plus kit $2500 from ebay. That is a cost of $9500, when a BA GT is $25000. Not everyone can throw 25k plus at a car.

Weathers pretty poor up here for fishing today.. must be better down your way hulk??

Alot of it has to do with money and p plater status... Nothing wrong with a young fella buying an XT and making it look like a GT providing he keeps it roadworthy and obeys the road rules...

Why buy a Fairmont and put an exhaust on it to make it sound like an XR6 T, why didnt you just buy an XR6 Turbo? Then you would have had the sound and performance to boot!!!

Its called personalisation...

O late model Opps

I read it as Why do people by XT as in 1968

and put XR as in 1966

parts on it,

I was like well there old and hard to get and many people beleive the XR to be a better looking car so thats why

BUT now I see your talking new cars, in which case its what the posters above have said

because they can

the question could be asked re XY's as in why does every one stick GT bits on them

(Personaly the stock Fairmont looks WAY cooler)

why is everyone one giving hulk_ba such a hard time its a pub thread about everything and any thing... he is right that 99.9% of non gts xrs what ever with those kits on it look worse than what they did standard same goes with the holden guys... ba xts could look good lowered on a nice set of wheels... kits on cars they dont belong on are rubbish and look terrible IMO... each to there own

Id say for many its the initial cost of buying the cars first. The XT may just be affordable where as the XR6/8 or the Fairmont or FPV arent.
They get what they can and then go about personalising them to how they wanted em to look, but couldnt afford initially..

I personalise all my cars in one way or another irrespective of what they are. Be them minor little things, like a T series dash faschia to make the dash easier to read and look way nicer (my cars not a T, then neither am I trying to make it look like one), or diffrent wheels etc..
Or on my XYGT if I was keeping that, Id paint it True Blue and throw the current trim in the rubbish where it belongs and put new stuff in..

Lots of people buy cars and see little changes here and there and think about how that would look on theirs too.. Nothing wrong with putting your own touches on your car, especially if your doing it all yourself and learning as you go..

Why dont Lamborghini owners put 5.0L Coyote motors in them ?

Then i could put a Lamborghini V12 in an XT and start a thread about why my tacho only reads to 8000rpm ?

oh sorry i got carried away ...

I went downmarket and stuck a Fairmont part on my GT - the chrome boot lip piece...Looks good with black. I couldn't justify buying a whole Fairmont just for the $90 part.
