Default Dealer gets fined for "Lifetime Warranty"

http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.../itemId/977865

Quote:
A Holden dealer paid two infringement notices totaling $13,200 following an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission investigation into its promotional offer of a 'Free Extended Lifetime Mechanical Warranty'.

The ACCC raised concerns as limitations applied to the warranty which effectively negated the 'lifetime' offer. The warranty offer only operated until either the vehicle had reached 175,000 kilometers or the consumer made $3,000 worth of claims.
Why oh why?

Bit like when they say life in jail, or jail for life, yet they let them out in 20 or so years, maybe we should fine some of these judges for misleading the public or whatever else we can think up.

Life in jail but they have a non parole period of 20 years, so technically its life in prison, they can just go for parole in 20 years time, doesn't mean they'll get it.

Come 2014, see if Julian Knight meets parole.

A Ford dealer would'nt offer this because Ford can't even supply body & engine parts for somes cars that are less than 15yrs old and that's nowhere near a lifetime!

I don't have a problem with the 175,000kms so much as the $3,000 limit. Since when did a warranty have a cap on how much you can claim, what a rort

i remember my tafe teacher saying new cars are designed for a five or a seven year life span. If they last longer your doing good is the car company's view.

The big problem is what is the lifespan of a car?

They don't last for ever but as long as you keep replacing bits you can extend the use far beyond its design.

From memory Falcons are 250,000km and 10 years.

There are many much older than that but there is also possibly someone reading this forum on a pentium 2 running windows 95.

Actually this brings to mind one of the most amusing things about this forum:

There seems to be a lot of people who are very against old people who do not function as well as young people driving as they are "dangerous" on the road.

But if you mention old cars that do not function as well as young cars the screams and moaning are deafening........

a few years back there was a certain asian car company that was promoting their 1 million km warrenty in all the adds. sounded good until you read the fine print and you only had 5 years to clock up the 1 million km.
that worked out at something like 160kmh x 24 hours a day for 5 years. hmmmmmmm....i think thats pushing it a bit even if you are taking "proton " pills.

Not even close.

That’s 3840 km per day.
1,401,600 km per year.
7,008,000 km over five years.

I know that the subject here is a about cars, however, one million kilometres over five years is quite normal for most interstate trucks.

Also, there are many companies that have multiple drivers in vehicles and one company I’ve worked for had trucks on the Melbourne - Brisbane shuttle that were hardly ever turned off and would clock up the million in around two and a half years.

On 900 km a night which is one Melbourne Sydney leg, 1800 return and either a changeover for the fifth night or five return trips a fortnight gives you 4500 km per week, over 48 weeks of the year still only gives you 216,000 km per year.

Over five years is 1,080,000 km And those figures are optimistic on the low side.

As to OLDER cars, the law says a manufacturer must carry parts for a period of 10 years on a sliding scale, from 100% to 0. The first parts to go are accessories then trim then panels and finally engine, steering and drive train.
You can't expect a manufacturer to keep OLD cars on the road in OZ, Jap cars are different as there are MORE built for worldwide distribution ergo, more parts available for longer.

For those with EL's and before, trade up
