Default Do you see the "GTS" badge as a GM only? - Shelby GTS?

Hi Guys,

I am partially answering my own question here but wanted others opinions.

While browsing through the new stuff at the New York Auto Show on the net, I see that Shelby have released their new Mustang but it is called the Shelby GTS.

Now aside from sub models (Ferrari 355 GTS, etc) I thought the GTS model designator was a GM badge, and GT was for Ford (Generally automotivly speaking)... am I wrong?

Nissan Skyline GTS

do GM actually use it atm? they had it on the old Monaro GTS and HSV used it on that ugly yellow commodore GTS-R.

GM HAS to use GTS (GTR,GTO), they can't use the letters GT, they never earned them.
I guess that anyone can use the GTS? the S just means sports.

What do you define as "earning" the right to use "GT"? The Skyline came out as a GT and a GTS.

Yes, the "S" does stand for sports.

If the letters GT or GTS were brand specific, there would be a patient on them. Considering many makes have these letters on their cars, you can assume there isn't any patient.

I am sorry if you got the wrong impression and also, the word is Patent, not patient. Only doctors have those.

I think we know what he means.

I love the use of the spelling arguement in most threads. It's a claytons comeback. The comeback to have when you don't have a comeback.

I believe the correct word is Trademark.

Two reasons behind my misspelling. 1. I got booted out of kindergarden, never to return back to a school again.
2. I just finished at the docs, when I jumped on the computer.

Hope that helps you understand me a little better

The S also stands for Spyder, meaning Convertible. Like the Ferrari GTS (Grand Touring Spyder) and GTB (Grand Touring Berlinetta) for the Hardtop.

So what has Ford Falcon done to "earn GT"?

The pommy Ford GT40s of the 60s?

Well in that case lets see the Festiva GT, Ka GT or Mondeo GT as they all have the save lineage.

I had a Cortina GT...

As for "haven't earned them"...? What? It was an old term when Ford adopted it, and simply means "Gran Turismo", or Grand Touring. Nothing special really or fancy about it. You could get a Mini Clubman GT as well. It simply signifies the car has some racing pedigree somewhere in it's DNA, related to a race or rally car the company produced at some time.

Porsche, Nissan, Ferrari and others have all used the name in the pass (Porsche still do) so I don't really see how it could be GM only.

There was also a Mustang GTS in the early 90s, fairly rare thing.

yeah i know what your saying but i think its only really a localized thing really. Like youd never bring out a focus gts or gtr cus its holdens thing. Or a Holden gt in aus.

Yep, a Base Mustang with GT Running Gear. I don't think they actually carried any GTS Badging, just plain Mustang Badges.

Always looked at GTS as a HSV badge. I know other cars have been dubbed a GTS in the past but when someone says GTS, HSV is my first thought.

When I think GTS moniker in Australia, I think the old HK-HX Monaro's and the HZ GTS. I wouldn't think Ford would use it out here for that reason. Same as GTR and SS, even though plenty of other manufacturers use it, they're more associated to the GM product.

A bit of a twist on the theme.....

I kept the plates from my 73 HQ Monaro when I sold it and now they're on my AU Wagon. :-)

How about a Ford Falcon SS ??

Only 10 produced for homologation purposes.

Not really...look at how many cars of how many makes have "GTi" on the back of them. Most car enthusiasts will still associate "GTi" with "Volkswagen Golf GTi", but we all know it's a pretty common badge.

GTS is much the same. A lot of younger drivers wouldn't even remember a Holden with "GTS" on it.

I dont think any of them are unique to any one brand, Nearly ever major car company has made something called a GT, GTS, GTR, GTi and the rest, I personally like the sound of a Shelby GTS!!

Well HSV have the R8 Clubsport and Audi have their own R8 model

I think there was an HSV Grange SVO model within the past two years.

And it took me ages to think of a Hyundai rather than a Lotus when people said they drive an Elite.

Dodge also had a Dart GTS in the late '60's. Now we've had the GT & GTS argument, lets have the old "5 Litre" naming rights arguement, LOL! Just kidding!
