Hi All
just like to know . and there properly already a thread on this . i have just had it up to here with this shifter of the capri..i have ran new kits and made up new plates .even taken the bends out of the bottom plate so the pin can travel strait and all . taken the slop out of it so there is less slop from before .. and it still jams in gear ..its just a bucket of bolts the whole set up i think .. unless people can prove me wroung.... or my other option is a t5 box from a au or el falcon or xr6 or xr8 and i like to see if i can get a bellhousing from somewere that adapet to both v6 and t5 box.. is there people here that do that kid of conversion kits .... love driving the car but man thoses linkages and shifter ....makes you want to i hope there3 are some good ford lovers out there can can fell my pain and help me out... cheers wogboy |

If jamming in gear...do you still have the interlock pin down the middle of the shifter detent spring (between the shifter cam balls) just inside the linkage plate on the box? They tend to fly out when you remove the gearbox side plate and shifter bits move around. This fits down the spring between the cam selector balls and physically prevents double selection of gears as the selector cam balls simply do not have clearance to move (@ part 204E-7234-A if you already have a parts manual)). I can forward a diagram if need be. My box had lost this somewhere along the way - a cut-down 4" nail solved the problem.
- - - 0554297 - - SLEEVE - GEAR CHANGE INTERLOCK 70/GT .......qty 1 .... 0554297 And mine jammed...when the missus borrowed the car for a night. The need for rescue went down really well (not), and that was the last time she drove it...... 18yrs ago. Remember , a-n-y box that has remote linkages will have some slack. It is a fundamental design problem with that arrangement. Many connection/pivot points = more chance for wear/slack (that's why top-loader style boxes are so great !!) Another common conversion is a Supra box. I've heard that first gear is a bit low on Celica boxes (myth or fact?). Who? Dellow and others....but start saving your pennies. Many conv. options, the real issue is getting a bell housing that fits the Essex block. |

The Supra box 1st gear can be about the same (or worse) than the original Capri V6 1st gear ratio (3.54:1), but there are some with slightly better 1st gears. If you replace the standard 3.89 rear axle with a 3.09 it will be better. I've been meaning to call Dellow to see what conversion options they can do, as it seems that it may be possible to buy a Supra box with the right shifter position to fit through the standard hole in the floor. I'm not sure if the same could be done for the T5. Burtons sell a couple of bellhousings for the Essex V6, but they are pricey by the time you get them here. http://www.burtonpower.com/parts-by-...appl_engine=12 |

Cosworthfreak....Diff ratio 3.89 is a 4cyl. V6 came with 3.22 and later ('72on?) 3.09.
Dellow in the past had listed Supra + custom bellhousing 5spd conversion for a Essex V6 in a Capri . But I suspect you would need a new gearbox cross-member which IIRC means an engineers report in the A.C.T (don't know about other states) i.e. more $$$$$. Anyone who has driven a worn Beetle can tell you all about vague gear changes !!! |

Engineers certification is something I'm yet to fully grapple with, although just making time to see one is enough trouble. I'm too used to how it was in the 80's and 90's when things were easier (and cheaper). |

Your best option is a type 5 from the later facelift V6 Capri - good luck finding one of those. I once read in a magazine that the V6 Capri was light years ahead of the old 1600GT - what a load of cr@p (in my opinion) there is definitely more power and torque but thats about it, my old 1600 with its great close ratio gear box was a much nicer drive. Changing gears in a V6 is like stirring porridge at the best of times. You're on the right track Wogboy, ditch that old external linkage and get a sierra 5 spd or a type 5. To give you an idea of cost Capri clinic do a conversion for about $2000.
read this link http://www.classic-ford.org/forum/to...94&whichpage=1 BTW - i'd be interested to hear anyone elses opinion on the comparison between the V6 and 1600GT Capri regards Paul |

I have just replaced my 1600 4 speed with a 2l with a T9 5 speed behind it in my Capri unbelivable, it will be interesting to know how fast it goes as I have know idea what diff ratio I have & the tacho does not work. The motor & box came out of a mk3 Capri but the box has "88 Sierria" writen on it in blue texta. I had the motor freshened up new rings bearings & cam, the mechanic said to vary between 100 & 110 can't keep it below 120 (on the speedo but it could be way off) but it is a lot more fun to drive

Hi. If you still want to try a different box have a look at this http://www.galeforcezephyrs.com/link...o%20zephyr.htm from the galeforce website as from memory the Mk3 gearbox is a mirror of the capri box. The two blokes who supplied the info can be contacted through the ZZOCM web site http://www.freewebs.com/zzocm/index.htm . Cheers MD
