Default Valving springs...

Morning gents,

The T3 engines are known to have dicky valve springs, the big question is, do the 220 donks suffer from the same problem.

I think I can feel a frag of valve float once it's spinning above 5500rpm, which is clearly not good, but I'm more concerned with them breaking, as per the T3 engines.
I'm not too interested in ripping heads off at the moment due to bent valves, damaged pistons, etc.

So, the million dollar question is have you guys with 220's busted any valve springs?

Ive been told that the 220s can do the same thing. But Ive owned 3 of various kms & condition and its never happened.

I would say, if you intending on pushing the engine to that limit often Rick, you would be better off throwing in some heavy duty units in to be on the safe side. I can't answer for other v8 owners sadly.

All of them can do it, just doesnt seem to be as common on the 'lower' engines like the 200's. I would replace them if you're worried about it, good insurance.

My next door neighbours XR8 ute, 200kw, broke a spring the other week..
Dropped cyl 7 IIRC..

Ok, so it's not just a 'yeh it might happen' scenario, it has actually happened to at least a couple as far as we know.

That'll have to be next on the list I guess.

To you guys who have replaced, is the Crow kit P/N K6201 suited to the 220's as well, or are they just for the 250?

What else have you used, and what did you notice afterwards?

Hello Sox, Replaced mine a couple of months ago after noticing the same symptoms as you. Went for Crow HD replacement which was a no fuss direct change out, ordered them direct from Crow ph (03) 9357 0469.
Part numbers below.

7738-16 (Springs), 11700-XR8 (Chromoly Retainers) and 11701 (Locks)

Number 2 broke on mine @ 70000 ks only replaced the 1 the rest have had no problems so far ,

Did the top end 'flutter' go away?

Yes, sounds smooth as up top now...........Well as smooth as a factory built Windsor can be.

Mine broke a inlet valve spring, just before redline, apparently its more common for the exhaust to go, replaced with yella terra, pretty sure they are the standard, no dramas since

My 220 broke a spring at 100000k, got new ones through crow no probs.

Yep I broke a valve spring on No 7 (i think) a few years back. Didn't drop the valve thank god. Only had 115,000 - 120,000 kms on it too. Happened while moving the car in a workshop, so wasn't even under a lot of stress at the time.

Definitely recommend replacing them, especially if you have a few kms up
