I was just checking the NZ news site www.stuff.co.nz about the stricken cargo ship off the coast, and near the bottom of the article I saw some quite heartbreaking news for one Ford owner. The article outlines that around 70 of the containers have fallen into the sea, mostly containing chemicals and some empty. When describing what was in the remaining containers, the article states the following: "...The remaining 1357 containers had food, general cargo, refrigerated goods, and one Mustang car..."
It's going to be potentially quite damaging to the environment, and I hope the shipping company's insurance covers the cleanup, but you have to feel for the owner of the Mustang right now. I hope they get it off safely. Cheers Jamie |

I think salvaging the "bits of ship" (Hasn't it broken it's back?) are going to far over shadow the poor guys Mustang.
But, yeah... You'd be spitting chips if this was your new toy!

Edit: is there even a dry dock large enough in NZ to handle a ship that size? |

This bugger is spewing at a great speed. When it breaks it'll be humungous spread.
Now this is going to be enviromental damage but Iam thinking (and sometimes thats dangerous) but could they not set fire to the spreading oilis or are they to heavy to burn. Yup thats enviromental damage as well but would be cheaper in the long term?

It could be worse, it could be a tanker rather then a container ship.
Hopefully they can track down any/all containers floating around though....preferably before someone hits them. |

I'm over there right now...The back almost must break as it's not resting on the sea floor.. Where the crease is and back is above sea floor and cargo weight with sea action will break it up..
I'm at Whangamata now, just 80klm north of the Mount / Tauranga..Where the cargo ship is.. Meat patties where washed up on beach yesterday...

look at those containers just hanging by their twist locks ,
who is going to volunteer to climb up there and undo the twist locks if they get a sea crane near to unload them? |

Heard on the news that so far it's leaked around 300 tonnes of oil/fuel...
It still has 13,000 tonne on board! Also reports of some pretty "nasty" stuff (explosive/toxic) in some of the containers.... Gotta feel for our Kiwi neighbours, they've really copped it last 12 months or so.

Papamoa Domain - My work is literally 2 mins up the road inland from here. When I went outside to buy lunch yesterday, I was almost knocked over by the stink of oil fumes.

The salvage team have released an eerie video taken aboard the Rena yesterday. I'd like to see some of the armchair experts criticising recovery efforts dare to step foot on here...

Pretty nasty looking crack in the hull at the 3min 14 sec mark. Really doesn't make me think that any salvage operations stand much of a chance.

That is a tragic scene, honestly I thought most ships where automated around areas such as this? Its not like shipping started last week.

While the ship will have an Autopilot they are only as good as the info fed into them and are not able to warn of collision, all they can give is an off course alarm, that is if it has been activated....
We have ARPA Radar, we have AIS, we have ECDIS, we have forward looking Sonar, we have Paper Charts, we have the Mark 1 Eyeball, we are taught Advanced Navigation techniques.... All those things will help you sail safely around the world without hitting anything, what we don't have though is the ability to control human nature.....
