Does anyone know how to sell rego plates in NSW?
After having the XR written of recently, I have no need for the QIK 006 number plates. While I was putting them into storage at the RTA, I asked the guy behind the counter if I was able to transfer them to a mate & he said that it wasnt able to be done. Has anyone sold plates in NSW, and if so, how did you do it? cheers

Throw them onto an el cheapo car and "sell" the car to your mate.

Attach then to the cheapest car possible?
I have transferred personal plates, and have been told that the only 'plate only' method was between family members.

And why can you sell or transfer them in Queensland but not in NSW? What's the big deal?

You can sell or transfer custom plates in NSW, but you can't sell or transfer standard or personalised plates because you don't own them, they remain the property of the RTA.

Time for dad to retire, went in with his rego papers (or I think we (myself and my brother) bought a ute for him, put it in his name and explained that the plates were a gift for him. The whole thing took 5 min. He now has the ute and plates in his name. Didn't 'sell' them. This would have happened 4 years ago now. So I guess technically they are now his. From what I remember the person behind the counter said they can be transferred to family ONLY (made sense, we have the same last name). I also had another set of personal plates in storage and put them on my wifes old car, which we keep as a run about. No issues with that, and the car is in her name only, so I guess they are now technically hers. That happened 2 years ago. We were told the same thing "family only" but my wife (at the time) was my fiance and we had different addresses and family names. Perhaps the person behind the counter stuffed up?

Easy yes, but still costly and requires a lot of trust.
Stamp duty still needs to be paid (no trying to transfer it as a $1 sale). Also would you trust a stranger transferring your car to their name???? |

No need to get anything special prior to the sale. The fact it's registered means it is also deemed roadworthy for the period of registration.

Its easy.
They agree on the figure, the owner of the plates then hands them back into the RTA. The purchaser then goes to the RTA and orders those particular plates.
