Default what is the next problem in the IRS

as the question states, I still have "noise" as in clonking and banging coming from my drivers side rear end

the centre bush has been replaced so i assume it's not that, only done one trip of around 4,000 kilometres since

I've had it checked out but nothing can be found......I've had a look myself and can find nothing

I'm getting a "clunk" on takeoff, not all the time but when the car is on a rise or similar

everything, that I can see and fell, feels tight?????

seems more to one side.....mainly drivers......I cant find it

the diff bushes would/should be central unless the sound is travelling

Have you checked the lower wishbone/control arm bushes with something to get some serious leverage on them like a tyre lever or something. you might have a soft bush that only gives when under extra load like taking off up hill. Also look at the shock bushes and sway bar bushes the same way. Get some leverage on them and see what moves first.

I've had a jimmy bar under there and all seemed okay....ford and the yard I bought it from reckoned they checked them as well

but I guess a soft bush may evade all cursory tests....i'll have another look at them when I get home

I just had a problem with loud clunking from the left rear of our SX territory.

I had already recently replaced the main lower outer and single upper outer cross-axis ball joints on both sides which is usually another possible source of noise (had to for rego though, this was 12 months prior). And the centre diff bush looked fine. Even checked the blade front bushes (had to do them recently on my BA) but it was fine.

Just recently replaced the shocks as it was still bugging me, and it has pretty much disappeared. Looked like the top bush on the left had torn and was letting the bolt hit the other ring.

One other thing to check are the sway bar links. Our Territory front links hard worn and and caused a clunking noise in the front on corrugated roads. I could still have rear link issues as I have not replaced those yet.

doing some deliveries this arvo and really listened.......there seems to be two distinct sounds one is like a bush has let go and the other is almost like the top rubber on a shocker has let go

almost like it has no distinct "weight" on it.....is this a common occurrence for the rubbers on the shocks to go

may need to find someone to take the whole assembly out and go through it on the ground but it wont be any dealers

I have been chasing knocks and clunks from my BF since 10,000km. Everything has been checked over multiple times and i still have them. I really peeves me off, and is one of the reasons why i probably wont buy another new falcon.
Check - jack in boot.
-spare wheel secure.
-shock absorber mounts.
-shocks themselves.
-diff bushes - all of them.
-trans mount bush
-tailshaft centre bearing
-cv on axles
-driveline bearings
-diff freeplay.
-diff cradle mounting bolts
-exhaust mounts
-fuel tank mounts
-all bushes in the rear end, including sway bars

When you are finished with all of them and still have a bloody clunk - learn to live with it until you sell it.

I've been in contact with a semi retired mechanic....i reckon we will be stripping her rear end down shortly and rebuild from the ground up.....just the matter of time

he charges $60 per hour instead of the $120 plus

I've looked into the jack and the spare and most of the obvious ones

but if I cant stop the clunks and bangs it will be shortly up for sale......I wont be living with it.....we travel a lot and we are used to near silence

Have you had the rose (pivot point) bushes checked? There are a total of 4 each side inners, outers, lower and uppers. I have seen these regularly cause knocks in the rear end at work (I work for a ford dealer). Should not cause your clonck/bang on take off i would have thought, but anythings possible.

supposedly all have been checked but i didn't get a detailed report back from the dealership.....

the mechanic that I just spoke to smiled and said that the IRS has a lot of problems but all can be solved

this is the kind of feller I wish to deal with .....it's to the stage I will willingly pay out of my own pocket to get it repaired and have a quiet vehicle to drive instead of the embarrassment that it is now

I like the vehicle and look forward to driving it but the constant clunk's and rattles just make it very unpleasant

I've repaired/altered the brakes and have stopped that rattle (thanks to the folks in here) but the rear end is just so bloody frustrating

I've looked over everything that I can poke and pull but cant find it......disassembly is my next step

if the dealership had done it properly in the first place I think this would be quite a good vehicle

I think it can be again but it will take surgery

Ahh ... noises... don't ya just love'm. Had a similar noise in my BA XR6. Turned out to be a faulty shock. Had an EF that started knocking near the driver side foot area. .... was an ill fitted front bush in the right rear lower control arm.
The most annoying noise that I ever had was a knock sounding like it was in the front bush of the right rear spring of my XA. Had the noise from new. Only there sometimes on rough roads or heavy acceleration or brakeing.

Found it when I stripped her down to apply fish oil after a bath in a creek crossing. A flamin' small screwdriver in the rear door. Friday arvo in the factory?

YAY!!!.....found one.....the one that sounded "loose" or not supporting any weight .....drivers side rear shocker

replaced that, the other noise is still there

anyone is more than welcome to come and have a look and listen.....perhaps you can see and hear what a dozen experts in the field could not......diagnosis of IRS parts is not my field

and I will be the first to admit it

I've had it in 3 large full-time workshops now and one smaller private

Ford's
Holden's
private

the only one that could hear the noise is a half deaf older feller who is semi retired......he's getting the job of pulling the rear end out......problem is he only works 3 days a week.....and he's flat out!.....and I reckon I'll have to help him.....making a time is difficult

I honestly think the others could hear the noises but don't want the job

thats how I found the noise in the shock.....drove around with it out.....I've still got one more to find and a noise from the front that I have yet to get to

just to find that one is a big step to making driving more pleasurable......I wont know it if I find them all!
