Speaking of petrol prices, a mate of mine that works at BP told me that the petrol prices should be coming down to the mid $1.20s p/l in the coming weeks.

Have fun over there Rob while the rest of us deal with school zones and 80km/h highways :(

It may be going down where u are... but it isnt here.. and it hasnt gone down here for over 12months despite the falls in oil prices. $1.49 for the past 6months and it never varies during the week.

My mate lived in Dubai for a while and told me the cops added a tolerance if 20 to 30% to a speed limit. More if you were actually a true blue Emirati.

Have done that trip myself.... Enjoy your stay ;)

Hi Rob, having been there a few times including the last GP, I travelled that freeway 8 times, I think you'll find the signage alters along the 10 lane freeway. The limit is posted as 120km/hr and them interspursed between are warning signs that basically indicate you will be booked if doing 140km/hr or higher. Your right Yellow_Festiva, this where the +20km/hr occurs. It's an unbeleivable moment when you step out of an apartment onto a very busy retail/restaurant/high rise hotel strip in Jumeira Beach, Dubai and a Bugatti Veyron is parked on the road, followed by a RR Phantom Drophead Coupe, a hotted up Cayenne,...and a Emirati dude cruising in his Ford F650(?). If you have the time Rob visit a Burger Fuel rest (great burgers) and sit outside in footpath seating and watch the locals go cruising past, we did this at midnight after the end of a local religious holiday break and while the food was great the passing traffic was a moving motor show of exotica. 1st Class Emirates is a shocker as well, as in omg like a train sleeper cabin, with 24" screen and individual drinks bar but at Mach 0.85/FL370 ...On a side note, more then 4 time more people die in the UAE on their roads then in Victoria, and Vic has over 4 time greater polulation, they are shockers.....but they love to honk and merge with little road rage.

When I was is Abu Dhabi a few years ago I went for a walk to that large Mosque with the huge flag pole to the side of it... Across from the shopping centre...

Just sat there on the side of the road for an hr... watching the many dream exotic cars that would drift by every minute or so... oh man.....

Of course... I killed my batteries in my camera just 1/2hr prior in the 'Heritage Village'.

The main Emirates Road that runs north south up through the different Emirates, has speed cameras. I remember a story from when I was there in 2008, the cashed up Emirati would just not bother to slow for the speed cameras and would amass huge fines.

Each year they have to front up the traffic branch and pay their rego fees or driver's license (not sure which now). But they have to pay all outstanding fines beforehand. A colleague of mine witnessed a women paying fines of over 120 thousand Dirams, which then was around $40,000 Aussie!

You need to also be aware that in that part of the world car crashes are regular beyond belief. An ex of mine visited and told me the horror stories.

Yes Australia should have higher highway speed limits. But dont hold up gulf states as a reason why - those countries are backwards in many ways. Road safety is one of them.

I just did 6000 miles in the US and pretty much sat on at least 80mph the whole time (if the speed limit was 65 or above - when it was 80 mph limit i did 90mph)

basically 130-140 the whole way - no issues - cops didnt pull me over - no cameras and guess what - babies didnt start dying once i went past 110kmph

No jobs for train drivers over there then...?
I did hear talk a couple of years back of train driving jobs on long bulk mineral trains, paying nearly $250,000 a year...some guys I work with were actually considering going over and doing 4 years and then coming back home to continue work here, but set for life with a big wedge in the bank...I think that was the UAE if I remember right.
