I have been speaking to a couple people about getting my tyre walls painted.
I have been told that doing this, the tyre is not roadworthy, due to the process of adding the paint to the tyre. I was told they shave the side wall of then tyre. Can anyone tell me if getting your tyre walls done makes the tyre unroadworthy? |

Yes...the side wall is ground away when walling a tire, so that the surface is even. They will defect you as the tire is "damaged" (not road worthy) and the load ratings are ground off. But, like all things car related, don't be a dick and you wont get attention. There is tires that are more suited to walling aswell.

Rule is, any damage/cutting to the sidewall deems the tyre unroadworthy.

On the other hand if there is a suitable space that allows painting without grinding away rubber, there would be no issue?

Nope...all fine then. Just a light scuff to help paint adhere then.

You can buy them made that way in thin whites and wide whites no need to have them shaved
Or you can buy kits to paint them your self no shaving so it's not a problem

The problem is, some/most tires have alot of writing, logos or designs on them, and the walls look better on a flat surface. There is one option, you could go rim skins...

First I'd heard of white walls being illegal. Like it would stop me though...

Keep in mind they are not directly illegal but the methods used to apply them render the tire illegal. You can buy wide whites, narrow whites, and GT style red walls that don't break the rules...

if the walls are cast with the tyre during the manufacturing process, this is LEGAL.
if the walls are painted on with the sidewall being etched, shaved, ground etc whether or not the load ratings have been ground off, this is ILLEGAL. painting walls on without damaging the sidewall (just using some wax and grease remover to clean the surface), this is LEGAL. |

One of the local Commodore heroes near my place has a good method of doing it. Grab yourself a can of white export and paint a ring-like line around the rim, being careful to paint the edge of your rim as you go, as well as not maintaining a hard outside line.
No shavings, no lost tire sizes or load ratings, just a white ring like line around your tire and some of your rim. Also cheap.

Lately i have done a lot of research on this subject. I live just near antique tyres as well. They really only do narrow sizes for legal white walls so if you want a narrow tyre your set. But i needed something for my datsun which has wide rims. I got flappers AKA port a walls. They are stressfull as you live in constant fear you will damage them. But they are an easy alternative. You can also buy them so they look like narrow white walls. The really arent as great as i hoped.
But if you really want white walls my advice is for cost and legality get flappers.

Factory made white wall tyres are starting to come back into fashion, especially in the 14" range. A quick trip or phone call to your local tyre store is all you need to find out what is available....
Flappers are another good alternative.....Only problem is, they flap round in the breeze....hence the name....So good suggestion GSPECZL Just to clarify rules about white walls....If the factory manufacturers the tyre with a white wall, it LEGAL......If it's put on after the tyre has been manufactured, it's ILLEGAL

Putting a white wall on a tyre after it's manufacturered is ILLEGAL. If the tyre was manufacturered with a white wall, it's LEGAL. Simple

no no no no no no... -Painting a stripe on your tire, ie white walls IS NOT illegal -Grinding out the tire for white walls IS illegal. And this is why: When a white wall is applied, the sidewall is ground back, so the surface is flat, so that the tire brand, load rating etc is all flat (aesthetically looks better) and It also helps adhesion. Because the sidewall is altered, with the loadrating taken off, and the fact that some whitewalling people grind deep into the sidewall renders them illegal. There are a few tires (i think kumho brand) that have a little band around the tire that doesn't contain any load rating information. With these tires, you can get away with painting a thin sidewall without rendering the tire illegal.

Take the deed to your house if you're planning a trip to antique tyre, should almost buy you a set of tyres there.
