So I'm at the lights in an 80 zone (my favourite time to rev the XR out a bit). I pop it in semi auto so it doesn't shift out of first too soon on me. I ease onto the accelerator to not spin the tyres and once they grip I gradually press further down on the pedal faster and faster till I reach around the 4.5k mark, then ease off and drop it in second, continuing to ease off and shift higher and higher, timing it so i just reach 6th gear when i reach the speed limit. I enjoy the surge and it sounds awesome!
My understanding is that higher revs and less throttle is better then low revs higher throttle (such as in od gears). This is in no means the quickest way to take off but its fun and seems safest. To the point,,my aunty happened to be beside me -_- I got a huge talk about how I am going to wreck my new car, that she heard it screaming and if she was a cop she would of taken it right there and then. FFS, surely it couldn't been that bad, supposedly i was already at the end of the road before the other car even moved. This is a stock FG MK2 XR6 running on 98 since I bought it brand new, would you say I thrashed it? Am i being a reckless driver? |

Nah mate, just stretching the legs a bit.
Roll on full throttle kick backs (cruising and putting your foot to the floor causing the car to kick back two or three gears) on the other hand will see issues later on in the cars life. Always good to blow the cobwebs out of the old girl every once in a while. |

well, think of how many people you could have killed with your lethal dose of right foot peddle planting
-- now lets me serious for a second. .. if you drove a car normal, i guess in between 2,000 and 3,000 would about right i'd say a bit of a thrash would be considered 5,000+ i knew this vx 5,7l loved the rev limiter Last edited by kyro_02; 17-06-2012 at 06:05 PM. |

Cheers lockieoc, I must admit I have given it WOT at least 5 times in its life to experiment how it feels using semi auto and auto. Also while overtaking. I don't actually enjoy it at all. How much throttle I give it is completely dependent on the speed limit. I might give it enough throttle to downshift from 4th to 2nd after exiting a major roundabout. I actually give it enough throttle to kick down a least one gear quite often, it all depends on the speed limit, like going from 6th to 4th in a 70 to 100 zone. I love the surge haha.

Who cares what other people think, i drove my turbo like i stole it from day one and haven't had any problems..
You're not going to break a car by giving it a flog every now and then..limiters are there for a reason as long as you're not bouncing off that you're fine. |

mate none of that is thrashing, i call 5 grand clutch dumps and limiter shifting every gear thrashing, actually reving a car out cant be that bad, surely ford put a rev limiter on it for a reason, thats the safe level that that parfticular engine will rev too, i just think its a built in shift reminder!! if it was only built to rev to 3500 then thats were the limiter would be,

Thats not thrashing the car, what you're doing is just accelerating (pardon the pun) your next meeting with the fuel bowser.
So unless you hit redline and bounce it often and whatnot, i dont see it as thrashing it! These things aren't made of glass! PS: Buy your aunty a bus ticket

Thrashing is what you do when you own a T5 equipped car.

bit of mechanical sympathy in regard to bringing oil up to temp (all the cars oil, not just the donk) and then nothing stupid like roll backs and the like
otherwise, give it hell and if it breaks it fix it wouldn't worry about what pottery's new facebook friend says |

Thrashing is over reving and poor gear changes that make the gearbox grind
Also really heavy starting and stoping |

Considered as thrashing in the nanny states of this country.
Considered thrashing, because you're revving it out more than what's necessary, regardless of it having a rev limiter or not. You're considered an idiot if it was in a Commodore and post it on this forum....However because it's in a Ford, you're fine Yes it's good to hold in higher revs to blow the cobwebs out every now and then...Helps stop glazing the bores up. Take from this what you will

I did some 5500 rpm shifts yesterday and before i knew it i was doing 175kph
On a racetrack. To OP, i wouldnt call it reckless, but just be careful, dont go doing it everywhere and have a little bit of mechanical sympathy

Slightly off the topic, but how come some people think rapid acceleration is more dangerous than cruising at the ultimate speed that is reached? I'm not talking wheelspin or noise or dragstrip style. eg halfway between 0 and 100 I'm only doing 50 in a 100 zone but for some reason that is more dangerous than 100??

I could imagine it now. "P plater George was caught flying off the traffic lights, reaching the speed limit dangerously fast in his supercharged V10 XR6 with nitros and flux capacitor that goes to 11 during low peak traffic on a large highway out of town. You and your family are in danger of this hoon driving, take now disabled geff who got hit by P plater Paul in his stock Accord. Geff pulled in front of Paul thinking he had time but Paul was already at the speed limit and approaching Geff fast but Geff couldn't make it across the two lane highway in time. Geff was pulling an illegal u turn at the time and failed to give way bug Paul being on his Ps and reaching 80 in 12 seconds was driving recklessly."
