Wow, the ABC is really loving predicting the end of Australian manufacturing. And resorting to quoting the editor of the Dog and Lemon guide who used to be a mechanic and now writes cookbooks??? Come on.

A very telling short sentence in that article that sums it all up.
"It is 40 per cent cheaper to build cars in Thailand than it is to build cars in Australia. No amount of restructuring or modernizing will ever make up for a 40% additional cost hanging around the neck of Australian manufacture, only government policy change can put our manufacturing on a level playing field with cheap imports. |

I saw the thread title and I thought "oh FFS, what "expert" have they dug up this time?"
And it was none other than that Holden-hating hyphenated clown Clive Matthew-Wilson. Case dismissed.

Whenever a company is reported to be in financial trouble, ABC typically likes to report on the matter in such a way that it seems like they're trying their best to drive them into the ground. They sounded that way not long ago when Channel 9 revealed they were facing debt, but unfortunately for them, the expert they interviewed claimed Nine shutting down would be unlikely.

The media bashing about the aussie automotive industry is getting a bit long in the tooth... but there are some valid points occasionally.
Sadly the protections our industries (not only automotive) have all lost out because of our "free trade agreements". No country can compete with 3rd world industries where the pay is a few cents a day.

ABC will take any negative news on car manufacturing and make it worse. They basically did this to Mitsubishi, they "predicted" their doom for like 10 years before it happened. I think they even did when the TE Magna was selling really well at the time.
Don't know wtf their problem is. Look at this one from 2000: "Future of Adelaide Mitsubishi unknown" http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/stories/s213246.htm Well if it's unknown what are they exactly reporting then? |

Did I miss something in that article... The title was totally "false advertising" as most of what was written was talking the car industry up, was it not?

The only good thing about this article is it doesn't have FORD in the title.
About time we have some negativity for the other brand!! |

He's right if you ask me. Same thing happened to bucket loads of other manufacturing sectors in Australia.

Let me get this straight,
The pair-trade for the ABC is short Aussie manufacturing industry, and long motoring/cooking experts? |

....so Sydney forecasts the demise of SA/VIC industry again again again ... What's new? The tragedy would be for us to abandon an increasingly important hi tech manufacturing sector with so many knock-on implications. What we need to concentrate on is cutting-edge design with R&D and proving done here and accept that we can't compete on assembly labour costs when compared to Asia. Ultimately we are in the hands our foreign owners....can we trust THEM? |

Not sure Holden will be shutting down in the near future but on the other hand I wouldn't be taking both Ford and Holdens words about staying here until atleast 2016/8 as fact. Things can go south very quickly.

Geez, it must be a slow news day, I swear these same journalists cut and paste Ford death stories onto a Holden title.
This is the same local production hate stories but with a Holden twist and i for one will be sticking up for Holden in this instance. VE Commodore is effectively six years old and has every right to be selling in fairly low numbers, you can only refresh so many times. |

this sort of thing is what I could see when Paul Keating was carring on about the level playing field. he didn't level it he tipped it the other way.
it was obvious Australian manufacturing was going to suffer when we eliminated tarrifs. I'm not saying the system was right but the complete abandonment of tarrifs crippled Australian manufacturing

That and the fact that money from tariffs stopped flowing to car makers and went into consolidated revenue,
the government wrongly believing that 10% price hike would slow the onslaught of foreign cars but gave precious little funding to local car makers to help them remain technologically competitive with Asia. Apparently the lure of billions in commerce conducted here in Australia was not enough to sway the government... |

When the auto manufacturing industry in this country collapses, and it will, i hope all the people with imports in their driveway are proud of themselves.
Dont blame the government for killing the industry, blame the people who buy vehicles built offshore! If everyone who was in the market for a new car in the next 3 months were to buy a Falcon, Commodore, Territory, Camry or Cruze, the headlines would be completely different. |

Surely the quoted "40% less in Thailand" is purely labour costs, not the total cost of making the vehicle?
Even if most/all parts are made locally in Thailand, shipping those parts to Aust in large volumes would not add 2.5 times the cost to those parts - and how much of a car's cost to produce is parts versus labour? |

They can tell us that we are too expensive to employ, yet they then turn around and expect us Australians to buy their cars with wages paid by companies that do employ australians? That's pretty smug.
I don't think so....you can't crap in the nest and expect a share of worms. |

Missleading thread title , I could have sworn the title of this thread described Clive Matthew - ( two dads ) Wilson as an automotive expert .

remember the meaning of expert. X is the unknown quantity and a spurt is a drip under pressure.
