Hi.
I have a Auto license. We recently bought a Turbo Diesel Pajero which is manual. My license is under appeal at the moment until Feb 2013. Is driving a Manual a demerit offence? I've drove my fathers manual and been pulled up and the officer never said anything. |

if the officer never noticed, i'd keep quiet about it. i never saw the point of an 'auto' only license. if you don't have the skills to drive shift, don't drive one period. or better yet, learn to drive in a manual from the outset.

Are you off your P's? I don't know if it has changed lately, but if you were on your P's, you had to stick to auto. Once on full, you were allowed to swap over and drive anything you want. That's how i did it, as there was no manual available at the time of my learning.

I'd be more worried about insurance being invalid in an accident, or worse, if you injure/kill someone and you aren't fully licenced for that vehicle could be serious consequences.

Also went done my green P's today instead. I passed the test, but because my license is under appeal I can't actually have my green licenses until March 26th when court is over. But the test still stands apparently. Thanks for all the info everyone. |

Tried looking in your profile but couldn't find anything about where you're at, so call me blind. In Victoria it is a demeritable offence. If you have the A condition on your license, then you are violating your probational license conditions and subject to a 3 demerit point fine. Pretty sure that's $350 these days but not sure.
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...ictransmission EDIT: Just read your new post. If you're perfectly capable of driving manual, why not take the Pajero and go do the Auto to Manual license conversion? You don't need an instructor and it only costs you $55. It's literally just the stupid drive around with the RTA person in the back. Again, applies to Vic. |

I'm in NSW. Forgot to mention sorry.
And I didn't think you could go from Auto to Manual half way through a license? |

You can always do a retest for a manual upgrade at any time. But to answer your OP, since you are a P plater, it is currently illegal for you to drive a manual.

If you did your test in an auto for red Ps you should have a condition A, which is obviously auto only. It's 1 point if you get caught driving manual.
Green Ps have no transmission conditions. Cheers |

Let me do some digging, I'll get back to you in 10 mins unless someone comes up earlier. We can do it here in the nanny state so I'm sure the New South Welshmen can do it too!

And on further inspection, Xr693 is correct. Check the difference between P1 and P2. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/...200707_p1.html http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/...200707_p2.html The auto condition is dropped. Just stick to your car till you're on your greens and then go back to the Pajero when you need to? Last edited by AcidTrip; 20-12-2012 at 09:29 AM. |

Ok well can I drive the Pajero from here to the RTA? Will go there now, it's a tiny town and no ones ever at the RTA so he should let me do my test today.

It's not illegal for a red p plater to drive a manual licence in NSW. When you go from your red to your green, you automatically go from in auto licence if you hold one to a manual one without the need for sitting an exam to see if you're capable.

If you want to legally drive manual on your auto license, take a fully licensed driver along with you.
One of the questions I asked my tester when I went for my P's in August, was can you drive a manual on your auto P's? Got the reply that If I have a fully licensed driver with me, I can. If you get pulled over, and fined for it you can take it to court and contest it.

It carries three demerit points.
One way around it is if you have a FULL LICENCE HOLDER seated in the front passenger seat whilst you are driving the manual. |

I'm sure all you need to do is re-sit the practical driving portion of the test in the manual vehicle, if you pass then you're all good. You'd have to come across a very picky police officer to notice the different transmission, like people said, I'd be more concerned about insurance covering the cost of an accident.

Auto only is a license condition. It would be treated the same as caught driving a V8 or without prescribed glasses etc.
