Maybe my critical thinking skills are too high for this.

"Mike Simcoe expressed enthusiasm for the Code 130R and was amenable to it reviving the Torana nameplate.

'Would I like to have a compact rear-wheel-drive performance coupe like that in any portfolio? Yes … in essence it’s doing the same thing Torana did all those years ago.'"

The quote doesn't support that statement. Just a pointless article really.

Another old news story :( What a shame, I would love Holden to bring the Torana back, even if it was an import they'd have a winner on their hands. As long as they designed it themselves and bought it out with lairy 70's colours, 4, 6 and V8 options.

Any 'Torana' you'd get in this day and age is going to be more like a Sunbird anyway (forget the V8 and probably the 6 cylinder option, 4 cylinder is what they'd look at in a car that size).

Having actually owned a V8 Torana hatch in my life time I'm happy that I had the experience and can kind of understand why they're not around anymore.

I could never understand why GM and ford didn't make a mid sized rear drive sedan (hatch/wagon) to rival the 3 series, could make it a global car.
How many 3 series' are sold world wide? Surely there's a market.

Because the 3 series is not a mid sizer, it's interior dimensions are more like Focus.

And Cadillac's ATS is not setting the world on fire in the biggest most forgiving market in the world..

Yeah, fair enough, it has grown all over the years but the point still remains, why not make a modern Torana/Escort?

When it comes to small sedans, there is a preference for FWD because of less impact on cabin space. Truth is, the majority of buyers out there have little preference for RWD, bar a few niche sectors.

Cadillac (and Lexus) have the smaller RWD sedan to target the market that BMW, Merc etc have under control...yet (as jpd80 said), its not really making an impact.

Opportunity cost - taking money away from existing products already developed
Marketing - what advantage does having a RWD compact have over the FWD competition
and why would people pick your vehicle over existing well selling brands..

toyota and subaru did it why don't ford and holden make one together, same shell, suspension, diff, and run their own engine and hanging panels
make the bulk in korea, thailand or china and fit the ford (or holden) elements locally
keep them a 4cyl or N/A V6 and HSV/FPV can fit V8's
price them about $25k for 4 cyl and $40k for V8

Facepalm......it's called Mustang

Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru, is currently in a partial
partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation, which owns 16.5% of FHI

Can it come with brakes that lock up really easily too? How about a diesel - non turbo of course!

I was thinking why drag up an old name so I looked for the definition of Torana
Web definitions
A torana is a type of gateway seen in the Hindu and Buddhist architecture of the Indian subcontinent..

Which is probably why they were not sold in India.

On the other hand, here in Australia torana is aboriginal for "flying" or "to fly".

Holden got a bit keen on using aboriginal names back in the 60s.

Monaro means "mountain" or "high land".
Camira means "wind" or "windy" or windy place".

i don't get it, heaps of people **** bag the idea but this is a way of having a mid sized rwd car from holden, who cares what its called.
i'd much rather drive a rwd holden than a fwd ford for the same price even if its just a 4cyl
as for the mustang its not really a car that will sell alongside a focus or modeo, its only a 2 door and most aussies want a 4 door.
I drive a brand new fiesta to get to work and I have an early commodore in the driveway as my enthusiest car, not because i like holdens but because its a RWD V8 and only weighs 1200kg.

Although it gets classed as a mid-size saloon for the most part - anyway, the caddy ATS has a huge market of competition - C-class, Taurus, Fusion, S4, tc - and it's priced itself out of a market for most buyers over there too

ATS is a compact, it competes with 3 series and other compact luxury models, not Fusion or Taurus..

Perhaps you're confusing external size of a "compact RWD" with a more space efficient mid sized FWD/AWDs?
And the reason GM does not have a compact Alpha sedan in Chevrolet guise is because of cost and lack of perceived
market advantage over the Cruze, a Compact Alpha Camaro will fill that role.

Isn't the malibu their compact segment? Or is that a midsizer?
