Mazda has plans to up its skyactive engines fm 14-18:1cr on petrol report fm GOAUTO.
It's 14:1 engines run on CNG as well but surely not at 18:1.

With modern cylinder head design and engine management this might be doable. A lot of bikes are running 14:1 now.

There was a time when Honda were THE leaders in engine tech, certainly not now.

This could be like how they were the only ones who eventually played with rotors.

I wouldn't want the complexity of a TSI4 long term, false economy but reasonable brochure figures.

If anyone is fudging economy figures its Mazda, I dont think anyone has gotten close to their claims with their new engines. Wheels long term CX5 2.5 is averaging 11.5L/100km

The 18:1 CR engines are expected to be HCCI engines, so not your typical petrol engine.

They lowered the CR on their diesels, so now are their petrol engines higher CR than their diesels? Aren't their diesels like 14:1 now?

I bought a,new Civic in'73 and have been a fan, at least of their engines, ever since but their distraction with its last failed effort in F1 (not to be confused with its previous success) seems to have had a disastrous effect on its R&D and thus sales performance over the last decade now.
Peugeot is now phasing out diesels with small capacity turbo petrol. With the phasing out of local refining, high quality petrol will come by tanker fm Singapore it seems and then we might have cutting edge HCCI engines here. There will be big winners and big losers come out of this perhaps with so many competing technologies....gas,petrol,solar/battery, diesel...........

Three letters.... GFC..... Most Japanese manufacturers virtually halted all R&D and spending. What we are starting to see now we would originally have seen four years ago.

Did compression ratios drop in diesels to add extra boost being turbo charged ??

My guess is it was to do with euro emission requirements.

The Mitsi 4WD has lower comp, more boost, more power over the 2WD..
Yes pumping more air through diesel engine will possibly help emissions..

GM and Mercedes are both doing a lot of development on these "diesotto" engines. It's probably the next big thing in engine development, combining the best features of diesel and petrol engines.

Hyundai is working on a CI petrol engine as well, so it seems there's a fair bit of backing for it...
