But how many did Ford lay off over the past 5 years in the US?

Its the same in every thread by the same people around here. You can **** and moan all you like, but business is no longer viable here and no amount of hard luck stories will change that. As said, Ford is not a charity nor are the other two mobs and the writing is on the wall for them as well.

I don't see how that's any different from propping up manufacturing jobs really. Keeps aussies in a job albeit on a smaller scale but the profits from both are going over seas anyway.

BTW im not happy about it by all means, I just don't understand how some of you think a business should keep operating at a huge loss year in year out.

Don't see what the issue is. They need more staff in certain parts of their operations so employ them. It has nothing to do with the closure of Ford Aus manufacturing.

As Ford fans, we should be seeing this as a positive sign that they are doing this!!

That's the question I'm struggling with at the moment; am I really a Ford fan? Or am I a Ford Of Australia fan??

There is a difference.

Yes there is.

Henry Ford once said.

"There is one rule for the industrialist and that is: make the best quality goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible".

I'm actually Thai, if you knew the country and how hard the people do it over there you'd have a better understanding. They earn about $200 a month and live with nothing.

They are a business and doing well! Good on them.

All you bleeding hearts - Ford don't owe you anything. They are not a charity.

Not too many industries that give you a 3 year warning that your job is gone.

And they(ford) have been selling cars here since 1917, I only know that because I used to work at the very dealer with that very sign , very sad indeed.

So...Ford are putting on more employees in:

  • A Country (region) that is witnessing a boom in automobile production due to low wages and a booming market. A region that produces units in the 100's of thousands both for local and worldwide consummation.

And...
  • Another country that has relatively low wages (compared to us) and its main output is a heavily selling product in its own country, a product that is protected from lower cost imports by a prohibitive protectionist tax.

How is this "insulting" or a bad move on Fords behalf?

I dont know why everyone's getting all ****y, we aren't the center of the universe. Ford doesn't revolve around Australia, their business is booming outside of our in the middle of nowhere small populous nation. If they need to put on more workers in countries where they actually turn a profit then good for them.

Even funnier people want the Aus government to prop up Ford here but seem to complain when other governments do it to Ford elsewhere...wheres the logic?

Screw that. The last thing I would be doing is spending my money in and supporting a country which has effectively helped kill manufacturing in Australia.

Yes but in Thailand's case, not only have they taken our business, but they were also hell bent on ensuring that ours didn't succeed, as was evident with the Territory export program.
I check the label on every single product I buy and I will be boycotting anything from Thailand with a passion.

Ha ha fair enough, you can't blame a third world country for trying to strengthen there economy.. You realise that 500 Thai Baht is about $20aus dollars do you think that When the parts are manufactured at such a low cost that saving is passed on to us a consumer ? The governments takes a share the company's add on there gross and parts are still just as expensive. Consumers don't really win we don't get a saving at all.

I always check out where the food I'm buying at the supermarket comes from. I try to buy Aussie made and owned where possible, but it's getting harder. I'd be interested how many on this forum do the same or even care.

They didn't kill it, we handed it to them.
