Default What makes you keep your car?

I've had my Falcon since the 5th of January 2009.

My donkey will crack 10 years of age this month, after 6 years of torture under my watch. It's nearing 117,000kms since my purchase at 48,000kms.

It's hard to pick apart what is happening between the ears, but I think I'll drive it until the wheels fall off. The human brain is a fascinating thing, but I think it is a case of "the Devil you know".

This forthcoming question doesn't apply to the steed that sits in your shed, only going out on weekend cruises. This is about your everyday car, the one that is your primary!

Why do you keep your daily?

My FGX XR8 (manual) hasn't been built yet. Projected delivery date now under 7 weeks.

Anyone in WA interested an a Sept '98 build ('99 plate) X308 XJR 4.0 V8 S/C (auto) with 79K on the odo in 6-7 weeks?

With my FG XR6T I know it's full history and everything about it. If i was to sell i would be starting from square one again. For what i would sell it for i wouldn't get a car as good as it for the price, even downsizing. I havnt had to do one single repair to it and it's got 77,000km on it now. It's not my favourite car i've ever had but it is extremely reliable and i don't stress about it.

My 91 Ford Maverick sucks the juice, 33l/100km around town and 18l/100 on the highway. The thing is all i do is change the oil every 7,500km and put petrol in it. I had planned to sell it 3 years ago but it has literally never failed me and all i have ever done is change the oil, thats it in 7 years. When it does eventually break down i will sell. For the amount it costs me in petrol i save in upkeep as i spend nothing on it

I get plenty of value out of my AU1 Futura. It's dependable & good on juice plus parts don't cost me a arm & a leg, i know it inside out. Its never let me down once in 8 year's (touch wood).

1) Most New Cars are a bad investment.
2) Buying a Car is a major pain in the #$%.
3) Selling a Car is a major pain in the #$%.
4) It is a Ford and why would I want to sell it anyway.

Fixed that typo for you

Deciding to move on from one car to the next for me is normally a vast matrix of factors including, how much money I still owe in it, how much money ive spent on it, how reliable it has been, how reliable it is likely to be in the near future, plus whether its a full moon or not.
Its taken me 34 years to realise the longer you own a car the cheaper the ownership experience.

Territory does everything I need it too, a ute would be handy but I'd need a second vehicle then. Also at that at age where I'm not precious about it when loading it up for work the next day.

Wife still has her 2000 model laser, other than once a year servicing, replacement battery, 2 sets of tyres, 2 sets of brakes shoes the car is still in excellenct condition & just as reliable as the 1st day we bought it.

Best investment.

Focus is real good on fuel which helps because I'm only working casually at the moment while I study at school full time.

I was going to pull the trigger on a WM Grange last year at some stage but I made the call to go to school full time at the 11th hour right when someone was interested in buying my Focus, otherwise I was going back to full time work and I would have had the Grange so fuel usage wouldn't have been an issue.

I'll keep it until I'm done with school and back in full time work then I'll hand it down to the old man for free and get something else

Depends, also have a business idea that we've been floating around between a good friend of mine and got some really good information from some of our fellow business owners on this forum about it.

Plenty of doors are open its just picking one which is hard.

Because, despite being born in the 80's I am happily living in the 70's (much like the skyhooks) with my dub. Over 100,000 miles and counting. I have all the luxury features I could possibly handle... Armstrong power steering, two speed heater for the cold, four door (quattrporte) air con for the Summer months and it returns a miserly 9.5 to 14 litres per 100 km of foot to the floor driving.

Besides that, I still look upon XDs and newer as "Fancy Modern Cars" (Hell, even XA through C are a stretch, but I probably wouldn't say no to a freebie) So the likelihood of me trading "up" is not looking great just yet. Add to that the fact that, despite my car's unkempt and "well loved" outer appearance I still get countless compliments, thumbs up, "YEEEAAAAAAH's" and offers to buy.

On top of all that, there is just something imperceptible about driving around in a 45 year old car that makes me feel just a bit better about life.

Also, Where the hell would I find another one if I got rid of this one???

Cheers, Tony

why have i kept my AU ?

Its been a great car for the ten+ years i have had it,

small factory flaws aside it is ultra reliable.

its dead easy and cheap to service.

At 14 years of age and 230,000 k`s on it it still has 99% of its original suspension and still drives very good and all engine driveline is still unopened .

I have until recently i always serviced it 99% myself and i know the car and the parts i have replaced and what will need replacing next.

It is still a good car.

I own it !!!

I owe nothing on either, they are both V8 manuals, my xr8 is good on fuel to and from work, SS is good n fuel on the highway, mechanically my xr8 is fine cosmetically it's still a builders ute and doesn't have a straight panel on itso I can park it anywhere and throw anything in the back and not worry about it

I keep mine because it has been extremely reliable and faultless therefore I am unable to justify to the minister of war and finance a good reason to sell it. Therefore I keep it because I have to!!

Besides, I don't know what I would want to replace it. My ideas vary wildly, none of which said minister will approve of. Given I have the coupe in the garage and have been allowed to spend money on it means I don't have much leaverage over the daily.

+1 to owning all the cars. Dont get me wrong, the amount of times I hit up carsales daily because I saw something nice pass me by is chronic. Im also always checking with the online salary sacrificing calculator to see how that works too. Might do it once the C4 packs it in for the wife and kids to have something new.

But for me, I love the AU, it sounds good, goes well enough, I can service it, I think it still looks great and even insurance is good now (only positive about aging).

I would really like a FGX before its all done but there is just no incentive. What does a FGX offer thats worth $40k over the TE50?

The times I test drive something I get back in My Territory and it feels as good if not better to drive. its cheaper to run than most new SUV's being on LPG
& then there the fact that its not worth anything as a trade in.

We have 2 big dogs and 2 little kids, what ever respect I have for my car is cancelled out by them and the people in the Bunning's carpark.

it will need some money spent on it this year but it will be much much less than the transition into something newer
