SPEEDING drivers will soon have a new car to look for in their rear-view mirror.

The NSW Police highway patrol have just taken delivery of a new Ford Mustang V8.

A photo of the car appeared on Facebook overnight, just hours after the American two-door coupe had earned its stripes.

The image shows that lights and sirens are yet to be fitted but the car is well advanced on its way to frontline highway patrol work.

The Ford Mustang is one of a number of vehicles under consideration by NSW Police to replace the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon pursuit cars, which are due to go out of production within the next two years.

The Ford Falcon reaches the end of the line when the Broadmeadows car factory in Melbourne shuts forever in October 2016, while the locally-made Holden Commodore comes to an end when the Elizabeth plant near Adelaide closes in late 2017.

While some states have adopted a national approach to finding suitable vehicle replacements, NSW Police are considering cars outside the criteria because they have unique requirements.

A fleet of Ford Mustangs is unlikely to replace all highway patrol vehicles, but a number may be used for specialised duties.

Police in Queensland, NSW and Victoria have used two-door coupes for traffic enforcement in the past — such as the Valiant Charger in the 1970s, the Ford Falcon coupe in the 1980s and the Holden Monaro in the early 2000s — because general duties vehicles can be called to transport prisoners.

Other vehicles under consideration to join the Ford Mustang include the Chrysler 300C SRT8 Core and Subaru WRX, but the latter is yet to pass stringent NSW Police brake tests.

I still reckon the best car for HWP would be the Dodge Charger as used extensively in the USA.
Yes they need more than one make and model of car but the Charger has proven itself over and over.
If only all states in Australia would agree giving a large enough market for them in RHD to be considered.

If you "must not tow anything with this vehicle" then I can't see them having a real big load capacity, and as you say, Falcons and Commodores are loaded down with a ton of gear.

If he was smart enough to read the article he would have noted that it was just one of several cars under consideration. In this day and age of technology all cars now have radios in them. So if help is needed, even if it is for backup or to transport someone - it is not an issue. Any other criteria the police require is not mentioned apart from a big boot to put the IT gear. The Mustang has one of those.

The next post just goes to bag the author of the article, so when credibility comes into it, I go with the author.

Will probably be used for promotional work rather that daily duties, but you never know, HWP vehicles are rarely used to transport prisoners apart from the odd compliant PCA offender.

Usually GD's will transport prisoners in purpose designed prisoner transport vehicles.

I didnt think they would use them for HWP, but they use bikes which are just as hard to transport a prisoner on!

The Subaru WRX is used to good effect in the UK(I was there last year.) common are also Hyundai i30s(not as hwy pursuit though.)
