Default BA XR8 Prices.

Just trying to establish whether or not prices for the BA XR8 have tanked yet or are they expected to go down in price even further in the future?
The reason I'm asking is that I have someone interested in swapping their 2003 XR8 (automatic) for my '66 VC Valiant Regal, which I'm confident will continue to go up in value. I'd like an XR8 but don't want to end up with a $5-6k car when the Val is worth about $10K as is, which is what this bloke is telling me his XR8 is worth (it has about 157,000kms on it). Thoughts?

I don't think BA XR8's will be going up in value in the short term ( within 5 - 10 years).
However if you have one in excellent condition and low kilometres in 20 - 30 years from now, when they would be a real novelty on the road like XB, XC's are today, then it may go up in value.

The trouble is the cost of keeping it registered and insured for 20 years would be at least $20,000, so would negate any inflation in price.

You would make more money selling the car today for $5 - 6,000 and investing that in super or the stock market for 20 years.

157,000 is good Kms. Best way to gauge it though is look at previous models and see what their prices are doing. BA XR's in general I don't think will be hugely collectible as 3 out of 4 BA's sold seemed to be an XR of some variety. Then again maybe that's what will make them desirable in the future...

I know someone that bought one not that long ago for mid-$5K for a similar age XR8 automatic. And similar kays as well. Still needed work to be done on it too.

Keep the Val.

Definitely keep the Val! Not an equal swap with a BA XR8 IMO.

A good condition BA XR8 is probably worth about 10K right now but the prices will keep falling whereas your Val will only go up. Cant predict whether a BA XR8 will be a future collectible but I would be thinking a BA/BF GT (obviously) or FG XR8/GT will be more collectible being they were the last of their kind and more powerful.

You can get a BA GT for $15k, I dont know how people justify $10k+ for any B series XR8.

Amen to that. Sold mine in Jan 2013 privately and only managed to get $12,250 for it then, after being listed for several weeks asking $14k. Was immaculate; Blueprint with all the options ticked (18s, sunroof, premium sound, sports leather, tow bar, tints), and only had about 120,000 on it. Still miss it, but would think that the exact same car is only worth $8k at best nowadays, and a povo one worth $5k - $6k.

So BFII XR8 not worth 10k?
15k BA GT's will be high mileage Roughies, hence why the Low K Gt's are in the 20k region.

Why would it be worth $10k?

Understand there are some average examples, but there are plenty of GT's in the high teens that if you flashed $15k they would take it.

Tickford XR8's are a different kettle of fish.

Neither car will make you rich as an investment in the short or long term so stick with the option that gives you the biggest smile.

I'll go against the flow - BA XR8 is a great car. But no autos - man-well only. Look for something around 100k kms. Future classic.

I reckon Valiants have had their day. I don't see much hope for future growth.

At the end of the day what would you get more enjoyment driving? XR8 hands down.

if the val is only worth about $10k now its probably not going to increase too much in value, it definateley won't depreciate but it won't go up much more
plus it would be an expensive daily and you won't be able to park it on the street without worrying about someone stealing it
the BA XR8 won't depreciate either but probably won't go up any time soon but you can park it safely anywhere

but if i had the choice i would keep the val (or buy a BA GT)

why not have both??

I'd take a low k great example BAXR8 over a rough BA GT any day. I've been watching GTs for sale for over a year now. You won't get a clean low Km BA GT under 22k anymore. The upkeep of a rough GT would be very expensive as well. Personally I'd have a AUXR8 series 3 with rebel kit over a BA XR8 though. They are becoming rare now and good examples are fetching good money.

Thanks for the replies boys, as one of you stated; why not have both?, I'm keeping the VC and will look until the right XR8 comes up. Yes, I don't like the idea of leaving the Val parked anywhere, way too easy to steal these old cars and too many lowlife pricks willing to do damage. This is the VC. Cheers.

Love the Val, i had one as my first car unfortunately my youthful exuberance proved too much for the old girl and my license and thus we had to part.

What are E series or AU XR8s worth? Mint condition with low kms are getting OK money but just run of the mill OK condition ones are cheap as. In 10years you will be in the same boat and the Valiant will get many more looks.

Valiants rock, hang onto the old girl!!! Just like the one my dad had in the 70s but his was red!

I'd keep the VC. Looks pretty straight and rust free. Always love the front of the late 60's and early 70's Vals. VH Charger was my dream car back in the day.
