About time, and perfect if you are short on money, own many cars or do not intend keeping a car for long!
From 1st Jan 2018 you will now be able to to make the switch to three or six month registration periods, or you can continue with the standard 12 month renewal period. Short-term registration will be available if you drive one of the following:

Be interesting to see how much extra you will have to pay for short term.In Tassie the annual rate for a 4 cylinder sedan is about $560,but the 6 month fee is $302,so about $40 + penalty.

If you choose the 3 or 6 month rego options, you just have to be more diligent in making sure you remember to pay the renewal on time.
However, if you open an online account with Vic roads, I think they send you renewal reminders, especially useful, now that rego stickers are no longer. |

Oh this is so true, just make sure you dont drive without rego, the police are very good at picking your number plate if you drive unregistered! The fine is not cheap so beware!

However, if you are paying on a 3 month basis, then the fine is almost 4 times the cost of the quarterly fee, so it can become a very expensive mistake. |

So now they can jack our regos up to $1000+ and its only $250/quarter. Maybe I'm just old and cynical.

If they really want to win votes, I think they should give discounts on the registration component of the rego (excluding TAC Premium), if you own more than one car registered in your name.
Making it cheaper for those with a daily and a seldom used garage queen for example. Sort of like getting insurance discounts on multiple policies held with the same insurance company. |

NSW RMS Rego fee is approx $450, and the Green Slip (NSW version of TAC) for a Sydney metro area resident starts at around $530 odd an works up. Young drivers, motorbikes & utes all get slammed a lot harder again on the green slip too - some of them have to pay over $1K (plus the rego fee). Add in $30 or more for an annual roadworthy (on cars over a certain age) and it quicky shoots into 4 figures - and that's for someone over 30, with a clean record, and full-comp insurance. |

Blue slip (Unregistered Vehicle Inspection) $64. New standard plates $45. Rego $403. Green slip $341. Not that bad for a ute.

A good (or bad) example is my 1977 HZ One-Tonner. Commercial vehicle - tick Over 1 tonne payload - tick Over 5-litre motor - tick Over 10 years old - tick Metro area - tick The green slip itself is well over $1100 (although it is going to be reduced this year apparently) & the rego component is $450+. Last year it cost just over $1550 !! to register. If I was still stupid enough to have it registered in my company's name add another $80. "and that's for someone over 30, with a clean record, and full-comp insurance." Given that it's not used that much & with the introduction of the new CVS rego scheme for modified historic cars, can you guess what plates it will be wearing next year ? Dr Terry |

Having 4 trucks registered in Vic, sometimes there are times when I'll lay one up for 3 months. if the rego falls when its is not used I'll wait until I need to use it again.
Victoria gives you 3 months to renew anyway before it needs a roadworthy. So long as it is not being driven it that time. Not ideal but it works for me.

That's right (for personal plates issued after 2004, or older ones that are surrendered & reissued). Hence why I have old personals on both daily drives.
They also hit you the annual fee if the plates are stored - so it's $56 odd for annual storage + $104 plate fee. But that's what happens when you split off numberplates into a separate "division" to make it a money spinner & a place to employ ex-pollies & bureaucrat buddies to run it.....NSW for sale....again....SOLD! |

Country area - green slips are much cheaper. Living on the fringe of Sydney, we used to get cheap green slips, until they moved the boundaries out further. Added a couple of hundred $$ to each, yet nothing else changed - same car, same house, same roads.....

Exactly why my Brocks are on club rego. There's 950 reasons to put up with the ugly numberplates!
I recently travelled to a country NSW town & spent a week there. One of the activities was visiting a local museum. I noticed all the volunteers all drove 70s & 80s cars on club rego. Every single one of them. But not classics like an XC GXL, or even a WB Statesman - there was an early 80s Corolla, a mid 80s 626, the last model Corona they made in Oz, an old Stanza, and a very early 80s Rodeo. All on club plates. I asked one of them what club they were in, and he named it - an all makes club in the region. Then he proceeded to tell me that even though he's a pensioner with free rego, the Rodeo was still $800 for the greenslip, which pensioners still have to pay. He used to use it once or twice a week picking up stuff in town, or dropping off bits to mates on other farms, and quickly worked out that $50/yr for club rego was a much better deal, and he'd be able to stick within 60 days of usage. He now has 3 cars on club rego, and none on full rego. Reckons 180 days is more than enough for him for a year's worth of driving. Oh - he's also one of those who seem to have raised the ire of the government on this topic - he has an old van converted into a camper, on club reg, that he takes to Bathurst each year, and on various road trips to swap meets. So I wonder how many others have cottoned onto the idea of buying a $2K dunger from the 80s & putting club rego on it, to save money. |

Not sure about VIC, but in NSW, historic reg is limited for commercial vehicles - there's a maximum tonnage before it's no longer able to go onto club reg, and those that are eligible are derated on their load capacity.
If it's still being used commercially, there's no real point, as every RTA/RMS inspector is going to want your blood.... |

I still believe they should offer a per KM based rego, even as an option.
For me, I work in Melbourne's CBD so i do not drive to work. Over the year i will average around 8000km, at a stretch 9000km. Paying ~$800 a year for rego seems a bit steep when i don't drive that much. Same with my partner's car, she only drives locally and may hit 5000km a year.
