Ford and Holden total sales for a calendar year was last this low back in the 1960s (what makes this news worse is Australia's population back than was half of what it is now):

but total sales never been higher. Now that cars are more affordable most people just want cheap disposable white goods. It's no longer an investment, or even particularly hard to raise the finance these days. Ford and Holden simply can't seem to offer anything in that market place that competes with the Hyundais, Kias and Chinese crap.

Yet Toyota sells the most and at a premium.

They do have huge fleet deals though. They dominate that.

To be fair to hyundai, they aren't cheap crap any more. While current Ford passenger cars and suv's are quality products, the Koreans have come a long way and their products these days are right up there.

I know there are many that still think performance is an important criteria, but in the real world where vehicles are transport, the Koreans etc are offering products that tick all the boxes.

Disagree.

I want my whitegoods to work, be reliable and last for a long time.

Pretty much. In terms of perception, Toyota is the most reliable whitegood (we all know that's debatable) and the Koreans are armed with great warranty and reasonable longevity. At a price point.

I'm sure Holden would have sold more than 58k in 1961, they were making about 120-130k cars per year then. There were some exports, but not that many surely!

Holden sold 112,680 in 1961 including exports.

I haven't found 1961's export numbers yet. But in 1960 Holden exported 10,672 and in 1964 13,693 exports were a record number at the time.

Holden sold at least 100k in Aus in 1961.

I think Dowling has only looked at Holden's passenger car figures for 1961 and missed the light commercial (ute) numbers.

Thanks mate, I was sure the number was wrong but couldn't find the right one!

There's nothing wrong with fleet sales to daily Rentals provided the vehicles are the same as retail trim, it's the old fleet strippers and taxis that hurt retail values.

Similarly, commercial fleet sales are also good business provided the discount is not excessive, companies generally make a profit from them although not as much as retail sales.

The reason that Toyota are now so strong is that they have all bases covered in fleet and retail, that's not to say they are dumping into fleets, more that they have a very balanced business..
Ford & Holden definitely got the fleet discount aspect wrong, killed the resale and one of the reasons the local cars died. Fleet can be very healthy, good 'service at the dealer' business. Pulling right out of it or otherwise killing sales, I wouldn't want to be a Ford or Holden dealer now...

Ranger again shadowing Hilux by about 500 sales, pretty typical.

Shadowing by 500 sales? How do you work that out? Hilux finished the year with 51,000 odd sales to Ranger 42,000 odd sales,I would say that is a pretty convincing win for Toyota.Even in the 4x4 segment they sold more than Ranger.

1.
I was talking about December's sales figures that Bent 8 responded to , not the annual totals.
Ranger....3,365
Hilux.......3,871

2
Up to November, 4x4 Ranger sales trailed 4x4 Hilux sales by less than 2,000 sales,
the big difference is 4x2 sales, Hilux streaks away thanks to petrol tradie utes.

Makes me wonder whether the next great wave of low cost vehicles will be the Chinese..

I saw a JMC crew cab ute the other day that looked suspiciously like a previous Gen Ranger/BT50.

Falcon 5th best selling large car under $70k for 2018!
Mustang still averaging 500 a month which is quite extraordinary. Ford must be doing cartwheels with the Mustang in what is now what..... about 4 years since its return to Australia! Sells 4-5 times the units of it’s nearest competitor!
What was Fords original prediction with the Mustang in Australia? About 1000 units a year iirc.
Why wasn’t the Camaro on that list? One would think it would have at least moved 100 units for the month!
It’s not even on the list!

Looking at Dmax sales figures, they seem relatively consistent across the year roughly between 1400-1700pm. Maybe with the average increasing slightly across the year. The only significant exceptions to this being June and December. Smells like EOFY and EOY sales to me.

There were also two less selling days in December compared to 2017.

On pro rata selling, it means that Hilux and Ranger lost approximately
352 sales and 306 sales while D-max probably lost another 199 sales.

How good is it hey! Shows that people still have a passion in cars. Would rather see a rd with 90% mustangs than a whole heap of boring commuter cars

We have just come from Commodore and Falcon which were the most common cars on the road. Mustang has a long way to go before it gets to that stage.
