Good morning ladies, gentlemen and unicorns.
Noticed that since I registered for that VicRoads online system that now I no longer get letters in the mail telling my registration is due to pay. I think this is a bit disappointing, I quite like the paper trail to include with all the other reciepts for my cars and they all stay in the glovebox, the reciept they give you when you pay online doesn't look anywhere near as nice as the printed one they sent out with your rego renewal if you're not on this online system. It seems there is no option to continue getting letters for rego renewal, this was not explained once you signed up. You used to get the letter in the mail then pay online. Now you get an email which says a month out that your rego is due and thats it. I like the convenience of the online system because I can log in and see my ****box fleet all in one place with their renewal dates and prices, but want the nice looking letter as well, its always a nice thing to have when you move a car on the second hand market (or buy one) and there's a couple of rego renewals in there with service reciepts. This was how I lost my refrigeration handling licence as they were one of the first government departments that went paperless like 5+ years ago, without telling me, they kept emailing an old email address I no longer used that I did when I was a wee apprentice for the trainee licence at the time, and thus my licence expired and I can't be bothered jumping through hoops to get it again Seems like a bit of a trap to be driving around a car with an expired rego without the snail mail paper trail anymore - its not like rego is any cheaper saving them costs on sending out letters anymore. At least make the reciept look the same for the aesthetics, the rego renewal reciept looks like it was made in 1995, its just plain text so it doesn't look like the others with my records. I like the system, but ran into a issue where my payment didnt go through, in days past I would have got a letter, but this time a email to where I dont monitor daily, drove around unregistered for a week before it got sorted.

We get printed renewals each year still. Unless you are talking about that other useless RWC thing I too also keep every single receipt so happy to have the paper renewal. But I don't keep em in the glove box

Though mind you I've never had a proper RWC done on any of my cars anyway when I bought em and went to get it registered, so I'd probably still get away with it, you just need to know the right people. |

Use to hate that. Have you ever seen the mess it makes when you accidentally leave a drawer or the frig unlatched in a motorhome after the sudden brake test.

You would have not checked your emails for at least a month to have not noticed a reminder notice,I know Vicroads sed to send renewal notices at least a month before due date .Tas still send paper notices about 6-8 weeks before the due date.

If you use the google ecosystem, google calendar will automatically create a reminder entry based on that email. And if you use Android mobile phone, it will alert you several times on your phone before the due date. Hard to miss. And you don't even have to lift a finger.

Think of the trees! Get used to it. More and more critical correspondences are going electronic only. Waiting for the day someone sets up a digital mailbox where all your bills can go into securely, rather than just into your gmail / hotmail / yahoo.
The online payment system is great, but be aware you won't be able to use Bpay if you leave it less than 3 days before the due date.

Here in Queensland we have the option of moving back and forth between paper and electronic as we please. Queensland TMR prints on recycled paper, so got that covered! Plus we can pay monthly if you want. Queensland... The Sunshine State AND The Smart State!!! Exit, stage left... |

Thank the tree huggers for this one. And the bean counters.
I don't mind the email notification way of doing it. Works for me. |

Probably more the bean counters. Would be a massive saving getting to cut out middle company doing the printing and mailing. Then it gives an advertised benefit to the tree huggers.
Problem is a lot of people still just print them anyways. Specially small business. So the benefit to the tree huggers is actually lost. I print them, date them (as I do with any incoming bill), stick them in a pile in due date order, pay by due that and stick paid bill in expandable alphabetised folder. At the end of the FY I take all the bills out, keep them in order and stick them into a folder and tie it closed. On to next year. Takes longer for me to administer the business electronically than just by simple manual paper and filing process. Given you have to keep everything for 5 years its cheaper and safer too. |

Vic gov just announced they are partly privatizing Vicroads. Can't wait to see how the Andrews government will screw this up. |

That was on a cards a while ago. They started to outsource or privatise the IT system revamp?
We lost a few very good IT guys who went on to contract for that work. Their salary almost doubled overnight.

Look forward to how much registration costs are going to increase, you know what happens when privatisation happens they need a return on their investment
Also now leasing your custom plates instead of owning them outright, ridiculous. |

ACT gov sends everything by email now it seems. A couple of letters every now and again
Not sure how it works in Mexico, but the rego stickers are gone the way of the dodo around here since all the cops have plate recognition so it makes it redundant. |

W.A. lost the rego sticker back in 2010, people were complaining that they would forget to pay rego on their car , we still get the paper bill even though I have a DOT account and can see rego status of the fleet online .
I think it was 2007 when they privatised the vehicle inspection centres, inspections went from $40 for 2 inspections to being $160 for 1 now, wont be long and all the mundane tasks will be in the private sector to be exploited for profit. |

Haven't been over the pits in many years but it can't be any worse than the old public pits can it? You'd queue for hours only to be greeted by some disillusioned public servant ready with a big red rubber stamp for something trivial on your car. There was a guy at Warwick that revelled in using the lip of the pit to rip off front spoilers then he'd loudly exclaim "Its too low"

I remember getting a fine for not displaying my current rego sticker about 6 months before they canned them here, I bet he knew it was happening too. |

it's a shame the state governments won't integrate with the federal system so it's all in one place.

have just been on the VicRoads website
you can choose between Electronic and Post there is a Notifications Preference page When you click on on Notifications the page that is typically loaded is the Notification History - however there is a link to set your notification preferences (or if you click on Notifications in the location trail - you'll see both options ) You can choose between Electronic or Post |

I far prefer no paper, I hate paper. Also as far as renewal issues go, I always do a rego check a day after I've paid the rego. If it doesn't update to the new expiry date, you can investigate then. Or, login to the vicroads account to check. It's not tough to check emails daily..

I still prefer the paper one's in the PO box myself.
Biggest problem I found with Vicroads rego system is when interstate for a few months and a rego becomes due they won't send it to another address. Hence I guess why the E type renewals are a better option these days. From memory I suggested they do this years ago (2013) when I was caught in Coffs Harbour with a rego due on the vehicle I had with me and couldn't get them to send it to me unless I changed my address details to NSW. WTF. They sent it to my old mans address, he sent it to me care of the Post Office.
