K&N filter cleaning kit alternative

I’ve run out of the K&N detergent that comes with their “recharge” kit. But I have plenty of the re-oil aerosol spray. Are there any other safe alternative detergents I can use on the filter, rather than having to buy a new kit?

Have heard in the US they use dawn dishwashing soap as it is a “mild degreaser” and will remove the old oil. Do we have anything similar that we can use?

I don't get caught up in all the company BS that you must only use this or that.

Petrol, petrol, petrol in a dish that the filter will fit into and swish it up an down etc. Then if you have an air compressor give it a blow job !! If not give it a good shake and put it in the sun to dry.

Light squirt with any good filter oil, eg castrol motorbike filter oil and its done.

Been using reusable K&N filters for umpteen years as they are good gear but always used petrol as the cleaner. Easier and cheaper to obtain and it works better

Whenever I've run out of the k&n stuff I just use regular aerosol degreaser

Whole cleaning kit with oil is under $28.00 delivered. Not sure what car it's for but if your not buying OEM filters you should be years ahead financially.

Yeh I've been looking. Seems Amazon has a seller for the full kit for $19. I can accept that.

I rememeber them being 30 or 40 bucks, can't help but feel being taken for a ride when the oil lasts a lifetime the detergent runs out after 3 or so washes.

Researching this, it sounds like you can clean these filters with warm soapy water using dish washing liquid. You could also use an All-Purpose-Cleaner like Megs D101 or Multi-Purpose Cleaner, Koch Chemie Green Star or Carpro Multi-X. Or even a stronger mix of an alkaline soap such as Carpro Lift or NV Snow+

Also, it seems you shouldn't be blasting these filters with compressed air, just let them air dry naturally.

Hey DB, yeh my tuner said just use warm soapy water, but I wasn't sure if that would be enough to get rid of the old oil. I'd assume you need some sort of degreasing agent to dissolve all the old stuff.

I normally let is dry naturally, or if I'm impatient, use a hair dryer from a distance. Just need to be careful not to give too much heat and cause the cotton to shrink.

Dish wash is a degreaser anyway, so it will work just fine. I'd say don't use one of the "eco" ones though.
