Talking Whats Rice and whats nice?

Guys and girls - there has been many a use of "RICE" in these forums. So place the things you think are rice or nice additives to a car, then everyone knows what the general feel is out there.......PS dont be offended if you have some of these rice parts!!!! : :

Mine:

RICE not nice = neon lights on underbody
NICE not rice = Shaker on BA GT :Reverend:

You wanna know whats funny...i bet before the XR6T came out...many here would have said anything turbo was automatically rice. Thats how closeted some people are, but when their favourite manufacturer decided to bring out a turbo of its own here, things had to change.

But on topic: anything that ruins the overall character of the car is rice IMHO.

so while neon lights might work on a Nissan 200sx, they certainly are "rice" on a XR8.

Its only a turbo,

Its not like its all "woged up" (sorry I was offensive, but thats what people say) with exsaust big enough to fit your head through. Its just to make the car have more power, and better performance.

I reckon the worst thing is a monster tacho when the car already has a tacho or is no where near a performance car. I saw, not so long ago a Barina Cabrio with a monster tacho the size of a bloody soccer ball being driven by a woman who looked liked she was about 40. Absolute overkill!

eg. "Commodore Racing" "Hyundai Racing" "Tarago Racing"
The list goes on...

"Snap-On" slip over car seat covers, especially the "Real Fake Ones"(tm). They've gone from industry use to "Strap-On"(tm) use....

guess im guilty of this one, mine are black and not too many of them around ( well i havent seen any.. mine are real and at 100 bucks each may aswell use them and the fact i waited close to a year for them to come in..
id rather snapon than some thing like xtc, the one with the spider(the ones from autobarn)
as for neons, the underbody ones look ok as long as you cant actually see it(just the glow) oh as long as its a decent jap or done up car.
as for the modded jap cars, moderation looks good, whether its a lancer civic or whatever. seen a few nice ones down lil bourkest or boxhill or springvale way..
even some commodores look good, im not biased so as long as the car looks decent imo it gets my thumbs up!

ps. on my eb i have a small sparco wind screen sticker and on the rear of the bumper (blue sticker on everglade) so doesnt really stand out.. is this rice?

Does anyone know where the term rice originated / how it was named that and is there yet an over definition of this term or are we in the process of adding a term to the dictionary ?

My definitions of 'Rice';

1.Any car made in Asia. (aka.'Rice Cooker')

2.Over the top modifications to cars that serve no useful purpose other than to make the car plain ugly. (refer the paintwork of the purple thing in 'The Faster & the even more Furious' or whatever)

3.All show and no go.

Examples;
  • LEDs in the water nozzle thingies
  • Purple or Pink rims
  • Chrome rotating spinner rims
  • Fake Shakers
  • Chrome or stainless steel spoilers
  • Neon Lights (underneath or anywhere)
  • Excessive Gauges (like the one in that post awhile back, that was a classic ricer)
  • Spent more on the Stereo than the engine
  • No room for passengers or luggage (boot and back seat filled with Sub-Woofers)
  • Racing harnesses in a 1.5Lt Car.
  • Things hanging from the rear vision mirror (well..maybe not rice but I hate that, so I am putting them in. Especially those damn Crystals)
  • 5" Exhausts.

Actually Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all "middle eastern" religions...shock, horror...JC might have been an arab of sorts...hehe..

No seriously jokes aside, CDs, prayer beads...are more fashion accessories than religious items in cars...So yes you can classify them in the same category as the fluffy dices...

There is a guy around here in a V8 EF-type Fairlane (model?) with mags, etc ... and a huge pedestal-type boot spoiler .. ah la "rice". Could have been a nice car, now just looks .. hmm ..

.. but then again, I think that Dodge Daytonas and Plymouth SuperBirds look cool with their tall boot spoilers and aero nose!!

ok well accroding to wiki....

Quote:
The use of the word "rice" refers to the fact that the vehicles the term was originally applied to were of Japanese origin, originated as a result of the heavy use of rice in East Asian cuisine, and grew out of muscle car enthusiasts' jokes that cars from Japan used engines powered by rice alcohol.
Quote:
rice car most often refers to automobiles (usually economy cars) that have the appearance of a customized or high performance car, but often little or no functional modifications, such as an improved engine, suspension, or brakes. This practice is in contrast to the "stealth" or "sleeper" style of automotive modification where a vehicle may have major internal modifications for greater performance, but the appearance remains similar to that of a stock model.

Some people will call any Asian made vehicle a "rice car", frequently derogating it in favor of US-produced vehicles. There is also some confusion with the term "rice rocket," meaning a fast car, sports car, or sport motorcycle from Japan. Alternatively, the term "rice burner" is also used derogatively by American bikers to refer to foreign-make motorcycles.

to me RICE is all about the driver, not so much the mods.
the driver is often a tool who likes people to think they are 'into' cars, when they actually have no clue and only like cars to be 'cool'

but then there are mods like 6"exhaust tips and neon lights on the windscreen wipers and speakers in the front spoiler that jsut scream "im a tool"

yeah this one is so open to opinion its not funny

To me, rice is a modification that does not "flow" with the original desgin of the car.

^^^wack that in ya sig

Usually cars that are "riced" are sh|tboxes that look crap in the first place.

A well designed car should only need a nice paint job, lowering, and rims to look hot.

Of course some body kits look great, but its mainly the aftermarket that make a mockery out of the business. (But most of AWC's stuff is sweet..hmmm bobtail for BA)

Massive bodykits on small FWD 4-cylinders. Cannon exhausts. Over-the-top graphics. Neons. Autobarn spoilers. Altezza taillights. Masked headlights (putting tape over half the headlight to make them appear smaller). Tons of gauges, for no real reason but to look "fully sik".

In my opinion ricey is over the top. Grapics can be good if are small but noticable eg a hood graphic. Bigger rims can look good but if you go to big like tempy typer's VL with 24inch rims that looks ricey. Small sleak spoilers can look good but big over compensation spoilers make a car look ricey. I can go on and on but you get what i mean.
