Motivation for Uni

So I get up today to go at Uni, as is the norm. And I really just couldn't be bothered, I mean it's not a particularly hard day, but you know.
So I wanted to ask, how do I get motivation to do this crap for another year and a half?

I'm in my second year of doing a Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry. Basically it's like a three year course that teaches you to work for big Pharmaceutical companies and discover new drugs for them so they can get even richer. It's a fairly high paying occupation, don't get me wrong, I think I'm handling the whole uni life style of learning in your own time, I'm going pretty well too. But it's my second year now, and recently I've just kind of started wondering why the hell am I doing this when I know it bores me to death...

Mate, if only I should be so lucky. Im only in my first year\ of my law course, and am starting to really wonder what the hell I am doing here. The workload is a real kick in the no go zone! Suppose Im just another teenager who dosnt really have a clue where he wants to go or do. But your almost halfway mate, there's not much wasting it all when you are so far in, ive only just climbed in, and fastened my seatbelt.

Motivation needs to be driven from within, any / all external motivation is useless as it does not matter if you have the best motivator in the world banging you drum each morining, if you don't want to do it you wont.

it looks more like you need some quiet me time to ponder your future, and if it is that your fire has gone out then it could be a change in the wind for you.

Even if you don't like it, you will get the paper at the end. I know 2 guys who used to work with me, that have law degrees and none of them have practiced law since graduating and have no intention to.

Put into perspctive the amout of time in life uni will chew up, then think about the amount of time you'll have left to cruise in some nice machine all that cash your earning will provide.

You don't. If you hate it so much, leave. I was doing a Bachelor of Information Technology back in the day and all I did was read car magazines during all the lectures. In the end I gleaned so much from the car mags and various technical books I realised I wanted to do something in the automotive trade. I deferred after the first year and did an electrical course at TAFE (about 1000% more interesting than Uni), worked a few jobs in between but now I run my own business. IMO, if you don't enjoy it, don't waste your time because you won't give it 100%.

Motivation should be the $4000 a semester you're paying to be there... fact is, if that doesn't motivate you enough to sit in a lecture you're paying for, then why are you hogging the place of someone who's actually interested?

Thats one way of looking at it, but the $4000/semester can seem to be somewhat insignificant when contrasted with the issue at hand, what you're gonna do with the rest of your life (also the fact it's a deferred debt can kinda make ya forget about it). There's another way of looking at it though, some people go into the degree really enthusiastic and interested but get ground down by the beaureaucratic bullИИИИ and endless pointless theoretical excercises, they hit a bit of a hump about halfway through and have a bit of a "WTF am i doing here" moment Some drop out, some push through and end up with the piece of paper. Whether any of em find happiness, who knows. My opinion is that pretty much any job can be enjoyable if it is approached with the right attitude. But hey, I'm a freak. All I know is, what I'm studying is damned interesting and buggered if i'll let a bunch of old farts who could make a nuclear explosion a boring event force me out of it. Yugostar, if you enjoy the subject matter but just find the lectures boring, don't worry about it, the workplace is likely to be very different and much more interesting. And of course mucho cash = many cars (and possibly women if thats important to you). Just be sure to make the decision that is best for you.

Whoa, whoa whoa... $4k a semester, which uni are you going to? MAN that's cheap I want IN!
On a more serious note, if you can't be motivated by the fact you're going to get a degree that has potential to earn you lots of money, and the personal satisfaction of knowing you completed a uni course.. then no external motivation is going to help.

I hate uni, I am only there because of hwre I want to go, if I could pay them $50k now for a P I would and be done with it.

Unfortunatley you have to power on, it will all be worth it at the end!

Wanna get motivated for uni?

Well, just think of uni as a massive 3 year holiday before joining the real world and that should get you along.

I'm currently in the fourth year of my five year Mechanical Engineering Degree, and yes I have discovered we learn a lot of crap (ranging from finance, sustainability, economics and communication) which, although important to know for our future, does not interest me one bit at the moment. Just take the good with the bad and know when you finish you will be making lots and lots of money, and I bet you will probably look back and miss parts of uni life. Enjoy it while it lasts, that's what I'm doing.

hey yugostar,

the best way which i found to be willing to rock up is by splitting all my tutes up at the start. So I am at uni 4 times a week, so i have made sure i have a tute each of those days. It forces me to rock up since i alway have to hand in work.

This is just simple advice from someone who wasted a lot of money and time doing UNI the first time around... If you seriously are not enjoying it, see if you can transfer to something else without losing to much. But if not, ask for some time out.. Take a year off, work a few different jobs and really do some soul searching.

I wasted those years that I can not get back (not to mention the money), and here I am now doing UNI again as I finally found my passion.

Try to find your passion, by that I simply mean something that excites you, (or at least doesn't bore you) that you could see yourself doing for many many years hopefully.

I really do think you simply need to take some time out though..

Hahaha I'm studying right now (and browsing the forums occasionally as a break every half hour)

My main source of motivation would be that when this is all over (6 years doing mech eng part time) I will have a qualification near %100per cent chance of finding employment. I should be on $150k a least when I get out ( I am already working as a draftsman on the equiv of 75k a year if I was full time - will move into helping the engineer in my company in the next 2 years - ie should be considered experienced when I come out of uni).

This means I will be set for life. By the sounds of your choices you will be too. If you are good at chemistry (I am guessing that would be one of the main elements of your course) and want to help people get better then you are in the right course. Dont worry about working for large greedy companies any employer who has a large degree of success and has shareholders will tend to be 'greedy'. There are plenty of companies like this throughout every industry and you will end up working for them at some stage in your life. For example I work predominantly in the Mining industry and will most likely see work from BHP, Rio and Woodside at times in my life. Or if you were in IT you might end up doing work for IBM or Microsoft etc.

If you are struggling with the uni lifestyle etc maybe drop back to part time for a year or two and get a part time job, if you have good marks in your field already you might be able to get in the Pharmicutical industry, I am not sure if you have any sort of internship / Prac work later on in your course but this could help or count towards that. The other benefit is that you will start to see where all the stuff you consider 'useless' in your course gets used in the real world. You will also have some cash to make you life a bit more enjoyable.

Hope what I have written makes sense, and gives you a bit more motivation.

What gets me through uni (2nd year), is looking forward to the weekend, where you can hang out with your mates. If not, and its assignments, I tend to think, the quicker I get this finished the quicker I can go out!

How about picturing what kind of car you want, and having that motivate you?

OK lets see if I can answer all this stuff...

I don't hate Uni, it's just I prefer the practical work and experimental stuff to the mind-blowing boring lectures. As for the 'I'm waisting a spot' remark, I got into this course myself beating the all the others who applied, I'm not dropping out, so don't tell me to leave when I earned this spot.

See the main problem here is the crappy teaching environment that is at the Pharmacy College in Parkville, it's up on Royal Parade next to Optus Oval. I mean I have 27 hours of Uni every weak, 5 days a week and Labs on 3 of those days. I usually don't get home till 7-ish (crap public transport) and I work every Saturday at a Pharmacy. I like my field and there are some parts that I actually read up about on my own. But the amount of time it requires just really drains me.

I guess I'm just bored of the whole focus on competition in life.

OK enough of the ИИИИИing and time to get on with it.

Stick with it. It doesn't matter what courst you're in, you will always find better things you would prefer to be doing with your time. I started in law, transferred to business, stopped for a few years, then went back to business.

The motivation should be that 3 years in the grand scheme of things isn't a long time really, and you get your degree. Even if you choose not to practice in your chosen field, employers look to it that you have been able to better yourself through education, start something and stick to it through to completion, and no matter what, a graduate position in any industry will usually pay higher than a standard entry level position.

You may find the theory insanely boring, but when you get to practice it in the real world, you will probably remember why it was you chose to do it in the first place.

Good luck with it. Hopefully in 10 years time you'll be sitting back lapping up the rewards of your hard work.

Seriously mate, 18 months of treading water whilst you're at uni is nothing. Once you're in the workplace 18 months goes by like *that* (snaps fingers).

Yeah you go through some low points when studying... been there, done that... but you get that with anything... I go through flat spots at work where i just dont feel interested.. then something comes along and revitalises your love for the job.. uni much the same....

Money is a poor motivation for studying. Uni education doesnt equal good pay - i know plenty of ppl who went to work straight after school and their income blows mine out of the water after i did 4 years at uni. What should motivate you is your interest in chosen field...and yeah, its a pretty ИИИИen good feeling getting that bit of paper.

I never thought i'd see the day when i held that bit of paper and went "wow, i just finished uni"... now it seems like so long ago I can hardly remember it... lol

Take it fom me, you'll never forgive yourself for not finishing, even if you don't go into your profession.

I was distracted from my Electrical Engineering Degree with 4 subjects remaining. 6 years later and I am finally planning to finish them off. Yes working full-time is great, but I really want to put this study to bed.
Even if I don't go into that area like a few of the guys I studied with have, It'll be nice to have it backing me up. Especially as it covers extra topics like M&Ms said. Economics, Management and Cummuniation skills.

ive was contemplating quiting uni also,
but because mine is an Arts degree its not such a big deal :P

i can still get an 'associate degree' for my coarse, which is good enough for what i want to get into, but still id rather keep at it and get the proper piece of paper so i can atleast say i didnt waste all that money on nothing

Lol. I dont go to uni anymore but spent 4 enthralling years studying banking.

Forget the pain of attending, you cant avoid it.... but - I assure you that graduation makes it all worthwhile.

Im only a 1/3rd of my way through my Politics degree and what do I have planned after that; another degree and at least another 3 years of UNI.

My theory is dont quit or youll end up like some people i know with a 12K HECS debt, no degree and working at Domino's.
