Hi guys, got a wheel bearing on the rear left making some noise and I'm wondering if anyone's done a change?
What experience have people had with this? Better just to pay my mechanic to do it? Anyone know what a bearing is worth? Cheers as always guys! GK

yeah its not that hard mate. i spun out once and hit a gutter and bent my axle. not very hard to take it out at all. i put a new bearing on at same time when i put the axle back in, just work you r way around it knocking it down till it comes off.

I'll be replacing my front two on saturday so i'll let you know. As far as l know it's just 1 bolt then remove and re tourque the bolt back on as they are sealed units and a complete hub studs and all. Got mine from bayford parts on ebay for $88 each which is about half price l found anywhere else. Unsure whether the rears are the same sort of unit but i'll find out after the fronts are done.

Also, there is another noise, from the same thing, or a flatspotted tyre Im not sure, but at about 96kays it resonates pretty bad, sort of a "wuwuwuwuwuwuwu" sound! LOL! LIke I said, hard to describe. This sound comes and goes as you speed up though and back down through the speed of 96ish kays. Is it possible for a wheel bearing to make two types of noise? *GK goes and fetches workshop manual* GK

I would just get someone to do it GK. You REALLY need a press. You should be able to get an after market one cheap? The Genuine is AUB5000 and AUF5026. The first is the bearing and the other is the Seal and Retainer.

the rear is completly different to the front if you have live rear axel. dont know about irs. i just replaced one of my front ones it was pretty straight forward except the inside of the bearing stayed on the shaft on mine had to get the oxy out.

ill be taking this adventure soon too!!
cookie your statment made me definatly consider that it isnt just an alignment issue causing the wuwuwu noise from the rear left (Sorta sounds like real bad alignment of tyres so makes alot of what sounds like road noise but is actually bearing noise..) thanks guys

I done the same bearing in mine but with the irs it's alot hard & dearer. I got the mechanic to do mine. The hole thing ended up costing me over $1000 because it damage a few other part arond it at the time.

Well I took the SR to the old mechanic after work and was given the thumbs up!
The bearing isn't a bearing, but my sensitive ear is picking up a bit of diff whine, nothing to worry about says Chris. The other noise is most likely a dodgy tyre and we switched it from the front left to the front right to see if the noise moves. If yes, easy, it's the tyre. I can live with them for a while until I get some newies! I think! LOL! There was one other noise (vibration) at certain revs, which was the heater hose fitting rubbing a little on the underside of the newly installed gas mixer! A little bend, and voila! No more noise. Excellent! GK
