Default Trouble installing a K&N panel filter! (Yes, I know I'm dumb!)

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone is able to help. I'll preface this by saying that I am mechanically challenged in every way possilbe!

I bought a K&N panel filter for the AU and tried to install it today, but just couldn't get the damn thing to fit in the airbox. When I sat it on top, it looks like the filter is about 1cm too wide. I tried for about 10 minutes but just couldn't figure it out.

I've looked up the part number and I have got the right one, but I just don't know what I'm doing wrong?!

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,
Justin.

is it the wrong way around? you know they only do fit one way.....you wouldnt be that stupid.

Otherwise, if you purchased it online he must've sent you a BA one and had it in the wrong box?

It shouldnt be hard to install....it must be the wrong one.

That's what I would've thought too. I lined it up against the standard filter and it's definitely a different size. No amount of changing it around would get the stupid thing on!

And yes, I did but it online, but the box is showing the correct part number, so yeah, maybe it is the wrong filter in the right box....Great, now I get to test the art of getting a refund/exchange from an online ebay store.....!

However, might I just add, yes I am that stupid! For example in my last car I was changing rims, jacked the car up on the wrong spot and the car fell on the jack and pushed the driver's side sill panel up by about 5 inches. Then, I went around to the passenger side, jacked that up and did the exact same thing : At least it had matching smashed sill panels though :nutsycuck
There are many, many more examples of my stupidity...

Nah, learn't very little actually.... Another example is I decided to install locks on our sliding windows. I had to drill holes to fit the locks.... Got the drill out, held it very carefully, then proceeded to drill right through the fram and into the glass-result nicely cracked window. That was window number 1, window number 2 I did the same thing again :1syellow1

There are soooo many more. I have recently come to accept the fact that me and physical coordination (and probably common sense) are not really the best of friends, and I no longer do anything even remotely challenging that involves tools!

It is a tight fit - tighter than the paper one, but if it just won't go, then send it back.

Thanks JC, when you say it's a tighter fit than the paper one, are you talking a lot of extra force to get it in?

Not a real lot of force, but it doesn't just "drop" in. Given your window drilling story, I suggest you pay someone to fit it - no good putting the airbox through the chassis trying to fit the filter. LOL.

no, it WILL just fall into place. if it is a whole lot bigger than the paper filter, it is the wrong one.
i had a K&N on my AU and it should be the same size as the original paper one.
YOU HAVE THE WRONG FILTER. there are no if - buts or maybes....it IS the wrong filter.

is it at all possible that you put up a pic of both of the filters SIDE by SIDE so we can see how much bigger it is?

The camera's hiding from me at the moment, but just had another look at the filters and the K&N is definitely different. Now I've just gotta try and get an exchange....

my k&n filter i had to sorta force it into the box , i had the correct one, and it was a very tight fit , they all probably vary a bit due to it just being a rubber moulded outer lip, mine looked about 1cm bigger than the original paper filter all around , but it fit in there in the end np , now its been in there a while its easy to get it in and out again ( the rubber has squished to the size of the box ). gl

Gave it another go this morning, and yeah definitely the wrong filter in the right box!

It's about 2cms bigger than the original.

The good news is I haven't broken anything yet!

Yea despite the filter being completely wrong.
When i got my K&N for the ghia i found the filter needed more force that what i thought was normal to install it. Took a bit of fiddling around to actually get it in. And before u ask/think about it, i aint physically challenged.

doesnt the filter need to be forced in?... because wont that make all the air pass through the filter and not around it..

Just got it! They even refunded the original postage I paid.

I can't recommend Online Performance (via ebay) highly enough, great communication, good price, and as shown in my case will follow through any problems with the customer.

Yep, it fits! Just to be sure I put it on while I was there!

An again, I was very impressed with their attitude and performance. I will be buying extractors and exhaust through them next.
