We just got foxtel put in recently, I've been watching the music channel all the time. Last night the had they top 40 songs ever.. The one worth mentioning is led zep's stairway to heaven at #3. A live recording from some concert.

Anyways, there's Jimmy Page up on stage, the tightest jeans you can imagine, open shirt.. prancing around. You could tell instantly the guy was high as a kite and then some. Those where the days. Todays music artists are nothing.

Bruce "the boss" Springsteen was up there at number one with "'born to run" that was a bit of a shock to me, tho the guy ruled the 80's, and most of the songs were late 70's/80's, man I wish I coulda grown up then.

Really.....so the music of the 30s..40s...50s..didn't have anything to do with the music of the 60s...70s...80s....etc.

Like everything else in life it progresses some may see it as a natural progression some may not.

Personally you can take your headbanger and any other tuneless screeching current and back to the 90s..crap and shove it.

I enjoy the early formative years of rock and roll through to the heavy metal of Zepplin...Deep Purple...Pavlovs Dog...bands such as Alpha Centauri etc..etc.

I also enjoy the classical orchestral stuff such as Rachmanioff...Straus...Webber...etc.

Tsk Tsk Tsk, where have I made any mention of what music I listen to? I can listen to anything, literally anything, and can appreciate it for what it is. Including classical music, although I prefer recordings of pieces where family members have played in

My reply has nothing to do with what you listen to merely pointing out that there is a progression/evolution and as I said some see it to be natural some do not.

And going by your comment of the music of the 60s&70s started the rot wouldn't it be fair to say that the music of the classics gave the base to the 60s&70s?

Classical music did not generally have lyrics, they instead sought to tell their story through the portayal of the music. I do however agree with what you point out in regards to 60's and 70's being a evolution on what was built on from recent decades. But the 60's and 70's took music/lyrics down a different path, and has led us to where we are today

I'm not going to turn this into a "my music is better than your music" conversation, but let me point out something quite simple.

Music on the radio is different. The quality is different. This is because society has changed and the values have changed.

Pop-music, as I see it, is threefold.

Marketing
Pop music is used to sell records and make record companies money, but its also used to sell stuff. If you have a look at girly mags (I did a speach about this in year 12 5yrs ago, I doubt its changed!) they can tell you how to 'dress like' Jessica Simpson. So its makeup, clothes, blah blah blah.

McDonalds
Pop-music is zero depth. Most songs don't have any interesting story, often they make no sense at all. When a song is 'personal' its like, a really like...deep thing. If McDonalds is food, then Pop-music is music. Its quick, nasty and very basic. Some people love it, some people hate it and some people find it alright. But for some reason, its so goddamn sucessful.

This age
So, in a world where manufactured nasty music is poured from record companies, where making money is more important than making good music, why is all of this happening? Because thats life today. I don't think it can get much worse, but it certainly won't get any better.

We live in a manufactured world. Its what we expect. And all of those old rock stars just make retro cool next summer!

I was lucky to grow up in the "story telling" era when most songs had a story behind them eg. James Taylor , Carole King , Albert Hammond etc . and had the privilege being a "muso" and playing in 5 piece club bands in Sydney from 1971 - 1990 , our music ranged from 50' to current top 40 songs of the time.

I like any type of music as long as it's musical and/or danceable or there's a story behind it & prefer "feel good" music. (no "cry in your beer stuff") The 70' & 80's had a big percentage of really good music & even now my kids (14 , 17 , 19) burn CD's off my record collection .

Bands I was in played some country music , but I really enjoyed playing music by :-

Eagles................ Bob Seger
Cold Chisel.......... Ol' 55

Yes sir clearly I remember all these folk as I am obviously your vintage as appear to be an ever growing number of us, yay! We of this baby-boomer generation need to organise a hootenanny on the beach sometime over the summer break! Should combine it with another ideology sharing event/dinner currently being discussed by OutbackJack, MO, Olfella, and any other interested parties and myself.

Man, 45, dies after eating poisonous fish

A MAN has died in north Queensland after eating what is believed to be a poisonous toadfish.

The 45-year-old Fijian man caught the fish off a jetty near Bowen on Sunday, police said.

He filleted and cooked the fish on a barbecue on Sunday afternoon before collapsing on the beachfront.

An ambulance took him to Bowen Hospital but, despite attempts to revive him, he died at 6.15pm (AEST) that day.

Two other men who were with him at the barbecue survived.

It was not known how much of the fish, if any, they had eaten.

A post-mortem examination is due to be conducted today.
