Smile PC Gaming; 1990-1996

We have no PC gaming threads here.

Or at least none that are recent that specialise in pre SVGA games.

So what are some of your favourite PC (NOT Nintendo, Sega, Atari or Commodore!) games from between 1987 and 1996.

I have a few.

Star Control II -1992 -->My absolute favourite..no game since...
Solar Winds I and II -->Good, simple space action/adventure
Leisure Suit Larry I-VI -->Come on...tell me you haven't!
Police Quest I-III -->Sonny Bonds adventures. Excellent.
Quest for Glory series -->Adventure/RPG -->great stuff
Diablo -->One of my faves from the end of this era (1990-1996)
Need for Speed -->The Original, and the best of the first four IMO
Money Island I and II -->Guybrush Threepwood...classic
Dune -->Excellent, but difficult adventure/"management" game
Dune II -->The mother of Warcraft, Command and Conquer and all the sad imitations.

There are probably more, but I can't think of them atm.

Share some of yours, or comment on some of my faves.

I got Larry 1 through 6 in a zip file off Limewire.
It's all on my old computer, which doesn't have enough guts to run them.

My Dad loves the theme to Larry 1, he sometimes sets his computer at work to run the theme repeatedly...and it is his mobile ringtone. _

Your old PC must be really old if it can't run the earlier versions. Like 20 years old. I ran the earlier ones on a 386 fine. LSL1 ran on the XT PCs which had less than 10MHz!

Does your Dad wear Polyester Leisure suits as well?

Police quest was good, I tried to get an updated version, couldn't get it to work.
NFS 2 and 3 rocked, I think it was 2 with the ELGT.

Close guys

NFS 3 had the EL GT
NF4 the AUI Xr8
NF6 the TS50

There were some awesome games though in the early 90s- Warcraft I & II, Dune 2, Simcity 2000, Duke Nukem 2, Monkey Island, Sim Tower. They werent as classic as the 1980s games but they were pretty damn cool

OMG...so many wasted hours....lol

I remember getting LL and thinking how cool it was...lol...so sad

PQ was awesome, I remember that fondly. And the first NFS, I was so excited about it that my blasted 486 couldn't run it, so shattered.

Monkey Island is a classic, pretty involved when you think about it now.

Diablo is very good, what year is Diablo2? I still have that on my PC now and play it every now and then, so addictive, and online is cool too.

All these games have such great depth, something that is lost a bit these days.

LOL..I sound like an old wise man

If you want almost any old game, just type in the name of the game, followed by
"Abandonware"

I would list some abandonware sites, but I don't want to breach FF rules.

Mate, you listed almost perfectly, with the exception of Street Rods and Duke Nukem.

Absolutely worshiped F-19, but when I got a copy of F-117 Stealth Fighter, it was like upgrading from a hole in the ground to a toilet, such an amazing experience. And the original F1 Grand Prix, spent so much time on that during my younger years. Im still the only person in the family to win a championship on the hardest level and 100% race distance. :Reverend: Go Robert Davies!

Ok. We all have our favourites, but the list CANNOT be perfect without Star Control II. That game had the best graphics, sound and gameplay for 1992. No game has ever come close in my opinion, because no game as been able to do it as well. Nor has anybody bothered.

We WOULD have seen more good Star Controls, but Accolade-->Infogrammes-->Atari own the rights to the name "Star Control" and won't release it to the creators, Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III.

Star Control III was terrible as it wasn't written by Paul and Fred and represents nothing of the true story that was intended.

If you don't have Star Control II or haven't played it, GET IT! Best game of the '90-'96 era by a mile IMO.

If that barely ran on your 386, then it must have been a pretty bad 386, because it ran like a gem on our 286. No problems ever.

For the era, the best F1 game by a mile.

Only if you didn't turn all the eye candy on. If you turned on all the tyre marks etc on the track, the CPU usage doubled. I ran it on a 386 SX-25 pretty well.

Some of my old favourites:
Dune 1 & Dune 2
Doom 1 & 2
Duke Nukem 1 & 2
Wolfenstein
Blood
Jazz Jackrabbit
Blake Stone

I've nearly got 2GB of abandonware. It doesn't sound like much, but in the days when you'd buy a game on about 2 or 3 floppy discs, that is actually a lot of games.

What about Fade to Black. Oh and Lemmings! (maybe that was 80's though...)

Oh and did anyone else play Railway Tycoon? the original? Where you had to build stations and stuff near towns and resources, and you could upgrade your trains as time went on? :dj:

And the civilisation series, Im still playing Civ3. Thats one thoughrouly thought out game, I play almost on the easiest and its still pretty challanging, yet to get anywhere near winning on the hardest.

I have civ4, but need a graphics card :(, CBF spending cash on the PC though. PS2 is for the games these days.

Wolf 3D, Doom, C&C, the Strike series, Grand Prix 2.

And barely any of them run on this computer. Dammit.

And Half Life is 10 years old next year! I still have the original reviews of it. I feel old.

If you want to run older programs on Windows XP (if that's what you've got), you can download an emulator called DosBox. It's great for abandonware. You can also get the D-fend plug-in that gives it a full graphical user interface (beats typing in the old dos-style commands)

I use DosBox for 95% of my old games.

The problem is that there is no sound support for them in XP, or if there is, the sound doesn't work properly and runs slow due to some incompatability.

Another awesome game is Master of Orion. 1 and 2 were awesome. But 1 is my fave. The simplicity appeals to me.

Ok you buggers, as if I dnot have enough distractions already. From what I can gather to run these older games on XP you need:

1. DosBox
2. D-fend

What are the websites? I hope theyare torrents because I cant setup up torrent programs on my PC for whatever reason, I always end up killing my connection.
