Just went down and voted.
Here are two questions to ponder. 1) Name any government documentation other than a ballot slip where it is legal to fill out with a pencil that can easily be erased? 2) Name any thing you can do that is specific to your person, other than voting, that does not require any proof of ID whatsoever? So anyway this morning I voted 125 times but to be fair as we have 5 candidates I voted for each of them 25 times............ N.B. If you want to reply to this thread do not put any political dogma or propaganda as it will breach the T&C and kill the thread. |

I was wondering the exact same points this morning. As this was the first time I have ever been able to vote, I thought, ok, better bring some ID. When I produced it, "Oh, there's no need for that." WTF! So I take my ballot paper and theres a damm PENCIL! WTF again. For something so important, I would have thought a few more precautions would have been in place.

I couldnt agree more with your comments. so if you voted 25 times for each candidate, did you use my name for at least one of them, please say yes so I dont have to go there.
My annoyance is that this is one of the only countries still left in the world where it is compulsory to vote, or should I say have your name ticked off. Even if you dislike and dont wish to vote for whats on offer, you are still required by a draconian law to make an appearance.

Love reading political comments on a site that apparently disallows it. Anyway, one of my best mates seems to have lost his job tonight, a pretty dismal day considering the state Queensland is in.

I was thinking as i was bombarded trying to walk into the place to vote....
'if only you had this many offers for help in filling out a form when you walk into a government office!' and... 'if i went to every voting place in my electorate, and potentially others (it might be a boring day...lol) how long would it take them to realise i voted more than once AND how would they determine which votes were mine and therefore which were infact invalid?' (not a political comment, just slightly anti-governmental, there is a difference)

What would stop anyone from going and voting twice, at two different locations??
I think its time the governments started to put this **** online! They already post stuff out, so they could easily issue everyone with a password!

Did someone mention a 'hanging chad'? Just ask Mr 'I used to be the next President of the USA, Al Gore'
Hanging chads in Texas and Florida, made by bad voting technology are what brought us George Bush. Mind you both his brother are Governors of said states. So our history of pencils and paper voting have brought us legal governments without court challenges, not all ways good ones however. |

As for multiple voting, your name would be ticked off on two sets of books, when these are checked, they would assess how often that happened (ie: how many other people), and other issues of impropriety that arise, and then if required, a re-election would be held in that seat. If it was a clear win anyway, it no biggie is it if it was only say 5 voters?
As for pencil, they dont count them at home, and each party has reps at the counting, so it would be hard to rub out someones vote, rewrite it, and get away with it. its actually a pretty good system in reality. Who said online, virus, hackers, etc ah bugger that, nothing online is safe. Can anyone say Diebold? |

You need no ID whatsoever so just look up a name in the phone book go to a voting booth a long way away from it and "Bob's your Uncle". Many lazy people don't vote and the balloteers are all voluntary and make lots of mistakes so it would be very difficult to work out what actually happened and expensive to call another election. There would be even less chance of this happening if the seat in question was won by the government in power. My point was that this is the only thing you can do without ID and it is the most important thing that you need to do in society. Seems strange... Last edited by flappist; 11-09-2006 at 01:13 AM. |

I agree - should require ID, flappist. There wouldn't be that many people who had no form of ID at all, and it would make the process a lot more accountable.
I mean, bloody hell - 5,552 people voted for me!
