My understanding is that is you replace a factory set up with a rampod filter under the bonnent it is unroadworthy. (otherwords remove plastic box and replace with exposed filter) I will clarify this.

Why would you want to suck hot air into the motor with a open pod filter, when what you need is cold air from out side of the car, and yes it's illegal as the filter may catch fire due to the heat and other ADR rules, does you car have a panel filter or a pod? (Like the BA XR8's and GT's), see how you go with just changing the filter from a stock filter to a BMC filter.

yeh today i had a think bout the pod filter and decided to take it off....now driving with it off i decided it made my car go backwards n e ways. It has much smoother power delivery with the airbox back on and i dont even have a highflow filter or tickford snorkle

On a turbo, would probably have little to no effect.

Exposed pod filters are legal in Vic as long as it is secured and a non-oiled type.
