Post AU or E's?

I'm looking at an 8 cyclinder car. Now i can legally drive a 2000/2001 model AuII XR8 or an EL XR8. I have been told time and time again that the AU's are far better then the EL in just about every aspect. But right before i was dead set on getting an AU i thought long and hard and came to the conclusion that i really dislike the front of the AUII/AU series cars. I was just wondering if anyone out there has an AU ride that they have modded/changed the front look of the AU, IMO i think it looks ****. Also the overall shape of the AU looks a bit dodge.

When i look at an El, which is only around 185kw compared to the Au 200kw, i think the overall look of the car is better then the AU. Heres a good example of a car i believe is a good looking EL.

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...a/2132440.aspx

So the point of my post is to ask whether someone can change my mind on the looks of the AU with a few pictures of changed fronts? thanks,

then your choice should surely be the AU2. If the looks make you hurl, whack a TS50 front end or an XR50 from from AWC on there. But methinks if you buy one you'll soon get over the looks quickly :hihi:.

Yuck Man,
Stay away from that EL,
It's not even an XR, unless they
put the other front on it, which i can't
see why they would.
Plus it has no real performance mods,
and is overpriced

Don't mean to sound like a parent but good luck getting insurance for a V8 at 18 years old. What would you rather spend $2,500 a year on - full comp insurance or mods? Exactly.

If you want my suggestion - go pick yourself up an EFII/EL Fairmont Ghia (XR6 engine remember!) for $7-9K, fit an exhaust, convert it to manual and have some fun for a few years. When you're 21 or whatever and actually have some decent driving experience go out and buy yourself a T3 or BA/BF XR8. In three years time when petrol is $1.50/L the market will be littered with ex-lease XR8's that can be had for $15K. The end.

An AU2 XR8 will chew most of that budget.

A TS50 front from AWC is around $450, plus painting and fitting (around $450 again, I suppose), then you would need to buy the standard headlights and a series 2 bonnet - around another $500 or so from a wreckers.

Or, buy the XR50 front bar from AWC at around $450 plus painting and fitting. So if you can get an AU2 XR8 for around $14k, the other $1k will go towards the best looking XR front never to come from Ford.

Or you can just buy my AU1 XR8 dual fuel with around 205kw (140 odd kw at the wheels) for around $14k.

if its all about performance and you wanna keep it relatively stock... go the AU.
if you plan on modifying it fairly extensively, then go the eseries V8.

The EL that was posted, really didn't look like an XR. If it was an XR originally, why would change the front back to being a GLI.

It just doesn't make sense.

To answer your question though, AU would be the way to go if you can afford it. I have had mine for 12 months now, and loving it.

I like the AUII over the EL, mainly because of the IRS, but as said, an AUII will chew your budget.

There was a AU XR8 vs EF XR8 thread a few weeks back that had some good points made http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=74661

If you can drive an AUII on your Ps then you would be able to drive a series 1 TE50. It has 200kw, same as AUII XR8s. The TS50 had 220kw. Then they were both 220kw series 2 then the 250kw stroker in series 3. At least I think thats right.

Im also confused about the XR8. Was there a late series 2 with 220kw or was it just series 3? I know AU - 185kw, AUII - 200kw, AUIII - 220kw.

Depends what the priority is...

You said you are after performance mostly, in which case I think an AU is a better choice.
The EL looks better overall, but the AU is a better car on the whole and if you're after performance, and AU will do you very nicely. But go at least an AUII. Most kinks were ironed out by then.

Au is better in every respect except for styling, in my opinion.

If you cant stand AU styling well its a no brainer, but otherwise the AU is the choice, performance, reliability, refinement are much improved, plus the AU is less age.

Personally if i was going down the Xr8 route and wanted to do it on a budget, id get a AU I xr8 and mod it, the AU2 improvements are nice but in XR, but not as vital as it is in the Forte.
