Geez it would be tempting to head down there and yell out - "Well, make up your mind, are you gonna jump or not?!"

I came close to hitting one on the M5 one afternoon (long before the bridge cages were put up).

I swerved just in time to miss the guy as he was mid-air ... poor woman in the Magna behind wasn't so lucky ... she ran over the guy and careered off the freeway through the grass and into a ditch.

It was averaging about one a week off the Gateway Bridge in Brisbane when it was first built but it was never reported. It now has a safety fence in place.

I know that is the alledged reason why, my statement was more they never do release in the media, so how can he publish more here when it comes to hand.

Am surprised that they consider this a taboo subject for the media to broadcast.

It's not taboo and its not an alleged reason. It's a genuine psychological concern.

Ask any journo, councilor or shrink. The media has to be SO careful about reporting suicides - for the exact reason of copycats. It's not just an unwritten rule in journalism, i think its actually in black and white.

I'm sure people have had these ideas long before it stopped being reported. I would be curious to know just what impact if any it has had on reducing suicide figures. Copycat is such a loose term, particularly when talking about suicide. I know in my job we have had shrinks talk to us about it, one of them even had the gall to quote suicide figures that I knew were dramatically under actual figures.

While I agree it shouldn't be reported, I am amazed that the journalist are willing to abide by it when they report so much other crap that has a similar impact on some people. They prance around like they are above the law, and are often far from impartial.

ps, TABOO - Something that is generally not talked about.
A topic that makes people uncomfortable like death
