At some stage today, my ute did the one of the rear axel seals and the diff lost all its oil! Im told Ill have to replace the bearing as well, fair enough. Its going in tomorrow.
I was in a situation where I had to keep driving it a long long way to get home. Could I have caused any further damage? If the mechanic comes back and says you caused this this and this by continuing to drive it, I wouldnt know enough to argue with him. So, I turn to the knowledgable folk here... |

Oil is in there for a reason quite possible you could have caused more damage

Unlikely. You must change the bearing, mainly because it is damaged when you remove it to fit the seal behind. If you were to drain the oil completely (unlikely) from the diff, driving could damage it. Not likely over even a couple of hundred k's.

Well....
the damage was more than I expected. Dont know if it was the extra driving though. The axel is shot, havent seen one damaged as bad they reckon, and it did look chewed out, gone completely. Which in turn has wrecked the calipers. Throw in braked bads and disc machining that needed doing, the bearing, the labour, a service that was due etc.$654.00 !! That hurts, but I guess thats life. |

It appears that they have: Replaced: the axle, diff bearings, brake pads. Machined the discs. Not sure how the axle could have stuffed the calipers. If they were stuffed, wouldn't they have replaced them also? Was it that the discs were already warped and needed machining and they threw in the new pads, or perhaps the pads were low? GK

I had a busted axle seal ... and it did bugger all.
bearing had to be replaced at the same time as it is meant to anyway. But my axle was fine. I had a dirty rim from the oil ... but nothing major ... diff still had plenty of oil in it too. Bloody hell it stank when removing the axle. Diff oil is nasty stuff indeed.
