When I was parking in the carpark at work this morning, it was quiet enough to hear that one of my wheels is making a sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh noise as it rotates. It's not a bad sort of scraping sound... but something's definitely rubbing, I would say. Any ideas?

Sounds like metal on metal from a brake disc to me at a guess.

If your discs are slighly warped you can get that sound from the pads lighly rubbing as the wheel rotates , very noticable at low speeds with no noise around . Nothing major, if thats what it is.

Your handbrake needs adjustment (at the wheels).

Stand in a carpark and listen to other cars go by.... normally one side is worse than the other too. D

I thought you must just have been making too much noise ;)
Mine does the same thing actually... I'll have to get the handbrake adjusted by the sounds of it. |

Handbrake shoes is the answer, I had mine adjusted and the squeak came back 3 months later.
I then had the handbrake shoes replaced, and its starting to come back now too - 6 months on! Basically if the drum is worn too, then the shoes will wear to fit that shape, then start to make the noise again. I actually though my diff was making thenoise it got that bad! p.s...GK did a "how to" tutorial on filing down the leading edges of the rear shoes to eliminate the shush shush sound, i think he said its still all OK! Cheers. |

It comes and goes. Lots of cars do it.

But if it's fixable... why not fix it?

A temporary fix I found was while rolling slowly, just press and hold the handbrake button and gently ease it on a little and release it off. 9 times out of 10 it will do the trick.

I've had my brake discs machined and my handbrake adjusted by Ford for other things over the years. The sound has still come and gone through that time. Seems to be more common during warm weather.
From the messages in this thread, it sounds like it'll just re-occur if anything is done to fix it.

Yes, forgot to mention that cycling the handbrake will usually resolve the issue for the moment.

Yeah mine does it now and then as well. What I did was get an exhaust put on, now all I can hear is the V8 rumble and no shhh shhh shhh. Problem solved.
