Just a reference when looking at amps - look for S/N (signal to noise) > 95dB and also RMS ratings not peak power - I haven't got a clue about brands, but this is what I'd look at first. Power ratings on some of these amps tells you how much it uses - not what it puts out...If you have ever sat next to a guitarist with a 50w marshall amp you'll see that these are a little over rated. The Response 100WRMS amp looked good.

yup those are amps alright.
Yes they are mosfet just not good mosfet. Your Kenwood unit does not make 4 x 50W (you have been fooled by the marketing) Really unless it says (Alpine,Pioneer,Kenwood,Clarion,MTX,Infinity etc you get my drift) you are buying junk. If you can't afford good new gear buy good second hand stuff, in fact the older stuff out performs the newer stuff, old school rockford amp's still rock. The stuff you listed should only be used as boat anchors.

The numbers quoted by manufacturers are like peak power outputs on engines.
You never drive around using peak torque or Kw at 1/2 throttle at low revs do you? Not ment to be offensive but this is one of my pet hates from car audio manufacturers and salesmen who "fool" the public into these big 50W headunits. I have been involved with car audio for 10+ years and it always happens. You only get there by having the volume at full with maximum distortion, in reality the unit is really making about 18W RMS as oppose to the max quoted figure of 50W RMS this is a common trick that they use to make their units seem better than the opposition. If they were really 50W RMS then you would not need an amplifier, but in reality a 50W RMS amp will make a huge difference to your 50W PMP headunit.

Yeah - definitely agree with you there - I used to play bass guitar in a band, and was using a 400WRMS Mesa Boogie tube amp (weighed about 20Kg) with 2x15" + 4x10" speakers and you could feel it kick you in the chest - so when you see car amps advertised saying 500W+ you know it aint right. Just comes down to marketing and bragging rights.

BUT if you bought a 4x50watt amp and hooked that up to your speakers you will hear what 50watts RMS is not 50watts PEAK

No need to take it back mate, I think the majority of headunits are around 4x50 arent they?
Whatever the actual figure is its definately enough for the everyday joe, if you need more then buy an amp..... thats better in the long run anyway. |
