The NT has major issues with alcohol related problems. Plus, I thought this was a law anyway, I know in Vic you cant drink in public places unless its licensed.

Agreed.

Fact remains that people will drink irresponsibly in public (if drinking in public was legal) and that can cause problems with public liability etc.
To protect people from themselves, these laws are a necessity.

Smoking in public? Hurry up! The entrance to Centro The Glen (Glen Waverley) has signs clearly posted, "No Smoking in this area", yet people smoke there which I see as a sign of contempt for the health of non-smokers. So I support it to protect myself from a death that contains my lungs rotting and my esophagus contracting and bringing up black tar.

Haha then glen, you go there often then? im there nearly everyday and yes smokers,...isn't there a bud thing tho for people to put their smokes out? like the sand pit tihngs?

Yes, I go 5-6 days a week seeing that I live across the road from the place.
I've lived in the same house my whole life so The Glen makes good sense as a shopping destination.

People don't use bins to dispose. They often just put it on the ground, stomp it and walk off. A little bit of litter goes a long, long way.

I don't care about people smoking. Fine. Their choice. But I do not believe that I should have to walk through an area that smells of tobacco, nor should I have to put up with littering, especially when there is a bin next to the place which smokers pretend to not see, or make no effort.

As I said, smoking banned in public is a positive thing. I'll get flamed, but people joking about it, it is inevitable.

Agreed. Bring it in right across the Territory I say. Every town needs it, even Darwin.

I've lived in a few places... Moree back in the bad days, Cunnamulla (Luckily 50klm north of town) but none come close to Katherine in my opinion.
Everyone talked about solving the problem... Moree has turned itself around... But nothing ever happened in Katherine.
It's a major problem, and one of the main reasons why I left!

In Vic they already have...as of July 1st, all licensed places are now a no smoking zone, such as pub, club, pokies all that...

Already been done by Mosman coucil in Sydney. Banned in all public areas bar footpaths, but only because they knew they could'nt enforce it. Be prepared to start seeing more of it.

It's already in effect in the CBD in Adelaide, has been for a while. I think that Victor Harbour is also a dry zone, but not sure if that is all year round or just for schoolies.

Don't know about Adelaide but it is an offence to drink liquor in the street or public place in all of WA including Kunnanurra.
In fact you can get an on the spot ticket from the Police. It used to be $50 but just went up to $200 with the new Liquor Act.
I think the problem they have in Kunnanurra is you can give them a ticket, but are they going to pay it?
All their money goes on grog so it's a waste of time trying to enforce it, thats why they don't sell alcohol before mid day to try and stop it.

When the nearest building is 300km away and the nearest privately owned land is 250km away do you think you should be fined for having a beer while fishing?

NT has cattle stations that are bigger than the whole of Victoria. It is not like there is a pub every few km. I am amused that almost everyone who is so supportive of this doesn't actually live or has even been there. Yes AS is a pit but only because the namby pamby do gooders have made it so. Because if the actual problem was taken head on then we would be racist wouldn't we........

Great post. Suprised to see that no one has actually stated the laws are obviously targeted at indigenous australians. Oh woops, I said a bad word... i must be a racist?

The implementation of these laws will surely be the "hard part" as opposed to the enabling of the legislation. Although you have to wonder if this will solve any problems or simply move the problem elsewhere... solving the white man's problem yes, but doing little for the aboriginal people.

Yeah Adelaide CBD has been a dry zone since '01 i believe? Only covers the areas bordered by the 4 terraces tho... but i guess if people are getting drunk in the parklands, its out of sight and out of mind.

I think its pretty sensible anyway, I drink though not wandering around town. when i drink I like to enjoy it so i sit down at a mates place or a quiet pub, cos its generally the drinking wanderers that cause the most trouble (i see it all the time in servos) It can only be a good move. Though the quantity idea suggested by someone could cause problems, what if i go to buy my monthly slab will i need to take three mates along to say that its not all mine? same with the larger casks cos i know some people that aren't real ****-heads that buy the larger casks chuck it in the fridge and they are set for a while. But all for the no public drinking. :

Kununurra has been like this for quite a while.

The police can't enforce no public drinking properly so it still continues, but at least the law is there so they can move people on.

We have alot of other laws to cut down on drinking as well, Eg. No walk-ins to bottle shops after 7pm and not casks of wine over 2 litres during weekdays.

No smoking in public reminds me of the funny story someone told me about the official from overseas who was visiting a few government offices in Canberra. After a while he turned and asked his host: "Do you always have a problem with prostitutes hanging around outside governement offices?"

(Of course what he was seeing was the young ladies of the office who'd go downstairs for a smoko and hang around outside the front door!)

In Townsville the bottle shops can't open until 10 AM (Aimed at trying to curb indigenous drinking in parks,a complete waste of time and effort.)I had to laugh the other day,I was walking back to my car and the police were moving on a white bloke(drunk)from a park, he was complaing quite loudly that there were about 8 indigenous male and female drunks laying about swilling grog and why wern't they getting picked on..The cops had a laugh so did indigenous people(it's hard bieng politicaly correct)..

Its been law in the Territory for many years that you not allowed to drink in a public place with in 1 km of a licenced pub or club.
This law will only be with in the Alice Springs town boundry, not all of the NT.
There are many towns in the NT with the same law already, Alice will be the first major town.
