No, no external transcooler was fitted at the factory. Just the regular radiator one.

From memory, didn't Ford offer a Standard Duty and a Heavy Duty Towbar option? I would have imagined that the Trans Cooler would be installed with the Heavy Duty option, but I'm guessing Ford (in order to keep prices looking low) would have only offered it as a "highly recommended" option.

My old 5.0 AU monty had the standard towbar setup on it and it didnt have a cooler neither. Just that stupid aluminium and plastic radiator. Brand new copper rad sorted that out quick smart!

My AU has Factory Towbar & came with trans cooler
as did my EL previously
Ford would not fit a tow bar for me without a trans cooler on either car as part of warranty conditions
Maybe just an up sell but i reckon it is cheap insurance as opposed to cooking your trans
I believe it will really depend on the weight and distance you intend towing
Large Vans & Boats on long trips will put extra load (heat)on the drive train
Hope this helps your decision
Cheers

No, I contacted Ford about this last year. No AU had it unless it came with the heavy duty tow pack.

Having said that, my AUII already had one when I bought it second hand. I'm not sure what my tow pack is. Does anyone know how to tell?

Stronger Springs in the Rears , Stregnthend Tow Bar , and Trans Cooler Fitted ,

Dad Said when he bought Mums Fairmont Brand Spankers in May 01 , the dealer asked him if he wanted the tow pack , but then he said "Jesus , ive just bought a Car , Like i could afford a Trailer or Boat Now !" ,

i believe the heavy duty towpack is the hayman reece jobby, with the square hole that you put the extension into.

where as the normal setup just has a tongue that bolts on. i think.

that is comparing the Towbar set up on my AU2 Fairmont, and my mums AU2 Fairlane.

Okay, that makes sense. I've got the square hole and the extra thing to insert into it.

I think there is a sticker on the drivers side door near the field campaign sitckers or maybe the tyre placard sticker that indicates max towing.

IIRC, it was 1600kg for the standard towpack, and 2300kg for the heavy duty.

that being said, if i actually towed anything, i'd fit a trans cooler.

My AU1 Fairmont had the factory heavy duty Hayman Reece 2300kg jobby, but no trans cooler. Was the cooler part of the heavy duty 'package' or was it an option as part of the upgrade?
Incidentally, my towbar is for sale if anyone's interested. I'm going to superlow suspension, which wouldn't exactly be ideal for towing.
