For all those who use the M5 & M7 Look out
IT’S UP AN RUNNING, SO BE WARNED M5 and the M7 are now equipped with Point to Point speed devices. Once you enter the M7 for instance you pass the e-tag and it beeps. At the same time a camera takes a photo of your car and records The exact time. For those who have exited the M7 they would be aware that upon exit the e-tag system beeps again as you leave. At the same time another camera at that point takes a photo of the Car and the time. Then the computer calculates the time it has taken you to travel between the two points and calculates your speed. If you have completed the clocked journey too fast you are given a Speeding ticket. At the present time the speed limit is 100K’s an hour and you have a tolerance of 102 and no more. One fraction over that speed and you are issued with a fine automatically. Remember, this is going to be a very costly experience for some Drivers. It is also going to mean vehicles will be travelling at 95 in order to ensure that no ticket is issued. What a shock some drivers are going to have when they have used this roadway for a week and get a weeks tickets BOTH WAYS. Of course your license will also be recalled for three months and you know the rest. Take the advice and if you ignore it remember this email when you pay all those fines. Also, remember that now with the new legislation, fighting a speed camera fine is almost impossible. You must prove the device is faulty and if you are not a technician working on them, you have no chance of beating the fine. The Pacific Highway has a set and these are recognized as large Steel frames over the lanes with a speed camera and some distance up the Road there is another large metal frame with a speed camera. These new point to point systems are being put onto any expressway or highway where vehicles are not able to exit between those points. Also remember that school zone cameras are not speed tolerant and anything over, even 41, is a fine. This means people will be doing 38 to avoid any differences in their Speedo readings. |

yes source? Speed cameras of ANY kind in NSW must be signposted as such unlike other states. The ones across highways in NSW are for heavy vehicles only - they state this and if u pass under one at nigght, you can see that only large vehicles set them off...

Believe it or not, but from I was told the distance between all camera points are already inpace, & the time of entry & exit is already captured. If this data is sent to RTA it is a simple calculation.

I have received this in an email in numerous guises a number of times. One was a pretty convincing effort citing government agency phone numbers that went close to checking out - but didn't.
There is no recent bill that I am aware of introducing this legislation, especially in the current parliamentary sitting. Don't know who keeps sending these out, but some people still slow down and behave. So even this claytons thing might stop a few idiots so I am all for it. The M7 has a fair amount of traffic, with a large percentage of them trucks as well as a number of seemingly stupid roadwork zones that ARE enforced by the Highway Patrol with hairdryers and chasers - so I reckon its pretty stupid to speed on it anyway. That said no spechy computer program will do it - just your average highway patrol. If you are sitting on a GPS confirmed 99km/h cruise then belt it past the car you are overtaking just to get out of some maniacs way or some such thing, unless a cop is around I think there is little to worry about - at the moment. When it says roadwork speed reduction though, slow the hell down because the ridiculous tolls then just get 100 times worse.

F.A.K.E. (In relation to M7).
Here is another I was pinged about at aus.cars, (Note RTA don't reference KPH or advise tolerances publically). The source *will* relate to perverted attempted advocacy, not reality:- Quote:

Oh well I sped in both directions on the M7 today.
While I know they have the technology, they would need to advise us of this new enforcement. I also doubt a private operators cameras will be used for the RTA to fine us. If I get booked for todays indescresion, my imaginary friend will wear my ticket...again

FWIW, my brother-in-law is a senior engineer at NSW RTA and he told me a month or so ago that P to P trials on the Cumberland Highway (or is it Motorway?) have been underway for some time.

I can personally vouch that there are no speed cameras on the M5, until halfway through the M5 East tunnel. There is a breakdown bay just before it.

What about the fact that the M7 is variable speed limit? How can it be worked out on 100km/h when it gets pulled back to 80km/h for a traffic hazard like the 2 nice potholes that have been patched up lately?

The M7 has the ability to work on point to point fines.
However as it's a fixed camera system, warning signs must be in place. This is law. No signs = no speeding ticket. Simple. Cheers

Point to point systems can be installed to all roads, that much is a fact on paper, and - the likes of Harold would love it so. Says more about that character type than it does the systems 'speeding' victims. M7 letter is fake, again. That is not to say a money hungry Treasury can direct that such a system be installed in time. Atm legal issues keep 'point' systems under close scrutiny.

by the way, I'd expect a sign at the beginning of the route, informing of a point to point speed camera's.
I believe there is a warning at the beginning of the Hume Hwy, saying that average speed is measured on this stretch of road.

No the information is not used to calculate speed and subsequent fines. This point-to-point speed measurement is the one currently proposed by the NSW government for use on the Hume Hwy, in a similar fashion to how Vic has it setup. The allowable "margin" will not be 2km/h, more likely up to 7-10km/h, as per current speed margins. |
