Default Got fined by a council traffic surv. camera

I pulled into a bus zone last Sunday to pickup someone. I was only in it for two minutes with the engine running and indicator on, but yesterday I received a fine in the mail for $70 with photographic evidence.

The accompanying letter says that the council has installed traffic surveillance cameras on its main streets to catch drivers who are double parked and using zones they shouldn't be using.

So just a heads up that this is being done. Everyone I have mentioned it to said it's the first they had heard of it.

(This was in the Maribyrnong area, Victoria.)

Thanks for the heads up mate.

I have noticed a lot more bus lanes have popped up in my area since I have returned from 6 years overseas. Was wondering whether or not we can get fined here for using bus lanes the other day!

Luckily I have been conditioned by London driving systems to stay out of ANY bus lane at all times because of they all had cameras which issue fines

Was it one of those bigarse cameras that look similar to speed cameras or something a little more inconspicuous?

I haven't been back to the area, so don't know what it looks like.

Judging by the photo, it looks quite elevated.

Yeah, I paid $110 for one pizza last year when I stopped for less than 60 secs as my passenger ran in to grab from a mail zone. Sat night, 9.30 pm. I am sure Aust Post doesn't collect the mail then.

My own fault and fine paid, but yeah this was camera recorded too. Sutherland Shire Council.

Ahhh Maribyrnong Council, is there anything dodgy they won't do? Glad to see they haven't changed things in the Western Suburbs.

Interesting....

Does the local government act allow them to do this?
Is the equipment certified to a standard?
Is that standard accepted for this purpose?
When was the equipment last checked?

etc etc.

Local govt love to do things without checking because they are ABOVE the law.

Get it sussed by a solicitor, you may not have to pay it.

Just ask yourself one question.....was the car in the bus zone???

If the answer is yes just pay the fine and be smarter next time, like stop where you are allowed to stop...

I think you will find that the council in question has no concern at all for law.

Happens at Sydney International airport too. Went in to pick up inlaws last week only to find a great big red sign saying "no passenger pickups" WTF!!!!! As i was already in there i stopped in a bus zone (same as OP) and was gone within a minute. 5/6 days later $66 fine.

How the F$^& are you supposed to collect international passengers now? Does this happen at other International terminals?

Exactly, so why contribute to it??

It really is your decision if you want to pay or not, I choose not to by simply not going into bus lanes and bus zones to pick up people. Its quite simple really.

Really getting the fine after stopping for only a minute is a bit rough, as I am shure the sign did say busses only unless you are only a minute _

I believe they expect you to pay for parking (at insane rates). Have had to do so a number of times.

I think you will find there is a 20 minuite free parking section at International Terminal for just that, but Domestic, I don't think so.

You must thank Macquarie Bank for that!

Never seen it but then I'll arrive at the terminal roughly at the time of arrival and park and just wait at the gate... if I fly OS then I'll put my car in long term and drive home.

I can't imagine that 20 minute freebee is going to be very large and come close to accommodating those trying to save the $20 to park and wait in the terminal. I know if I was landing at 6am, I wouldn't want to wait for my pickup turning up late to ensure I'm there within the 20min freebee time.

Sydney domestic airport has a pick up bay that I have used many times, and its free to pick up and drop off.

Not sure about the international one.

Only the domestic has a pick up area and I think they only allow a few minutes, and there isn't much space., so you sometimes have to drive around a couple of times to find a spot. The International has no pick up, only drop off -if you use the drop off to pick up you can be fined. You have to pay the rip off Mac Bank parking fees, about triple what I paid at LA airport last year -it was $5 US for an hour and the parking station was a better setup.

Canberra airport does this too (and it's only domestic - even though it calls itself an international airport).

They want you to get raped *cough* charged for using the short stay car park.

Just before the 1st Domestic terminal is a side street where all the transfer buses park, It's signed as coach parking only but usually noone around. Alternatively just near the entrance road to the helicopter/private jet area is a spot where you can pull onto the dirt behind some trees and park and wait.

Some time back there was a TV story on one of those dopey shows following the news about councils installing parking cameras in an effort to boost their already quite considerable revenues generated by parking inspectors.

Part of the story included a camera that is activated by motion and so takes a pic on its hard drive when you arrive and when you leave. It then calculates the time you were there and if you're over, the fines in the mail.
