Default $20K on a workute

Hey guys, I'm considering to ditch the Fiesta for something much easier to get my tools to and from work in now that I'm an apprentice, I've got $20,000 to play with if I sell the Fez for about $13,000 which I hope I get through private sale.

Anywhoo criteria is:

P plate legal (I might be able to score a work exemption on this one but don't like my chances)

Manual

I've driven a Hilux with the 4L V6 yesterday and I quite like it, its got some good go in it but it was auto.

Also, what are the benefits of tray vs tub?

I Have a 06 hilux workmate dual cab 5 speed manual with the tub
it is one of the best cars i have brought in terms of that its economical has 5 seats being a 4 cylinder(2.7 vvti the corolla engines bigger brother basically)it doesnt suck down the juice and it does everything i need it for (sometimes i carry car parts but mainly use it for doing household stuff)I paid $21,000
for it last year with nearly 70,000ks on it and it hasnt missed a beat.

unless you're a real tradie () like a builder or plumber and will be pulling ladders, tools and materials out of the back then I'd go a tub.

Tray definately for anything work related as you never have to worry about the back of your car and the wheel arches are never in the way

I have just ordered myself a New Ford Ranger. ( At works expense, so low budget)
Just the entry level Single cab.

Test drove a few different things and found it the best value....

Cant talk about new hiluxes, mine is a '02' extra cab with the tub. So reliable and strong. Even with 1200kg it is a bit slow but it'll get you there. Tub is so much better than tray. Dont have to ties stuff down or put it in boxes

Could always go something like this, BF Tray back - not even 30,000 on the clock at 18k.... That particular one is auto, but manuals can be had as well.

How are the Falcons like compared to Hiluxes? I've never actually driven a Falcon before. All I know is that BA and the V6 Hilux are very similar in power figures.

Falcon is a car. Hilux is a small truck, as such it won't be as good a falcon in any category except reliability which the falcon has no major issue with. If you can get a 4x4 hilux (ranger, rodeo ect...) you'll have to weigh the pro of 4 wheel drive against the falcons 2 Wheel drive (solution rtv).

I actually don't mind sitting up high in a bigger vehicle, the only problem is its a bit of a bastard to park.

I don't think I will need 4WD, as I only tackle some dirt roads, I don't really know where 4WD would come in handy? Except for travelling the infield at my other job when its muddy, but you can get through that as long as you keep up momentum in just about any car.

im a 4th yr chippy and i got a ba xr8 ute styleside but it has racks and i picked that up for 20k and the tray is pretty full but aslong as you got racks you will be fine, also in the falcon ute the space behind the seats is handy compared to other utes for like dumpys n lasers n wat not. personally i could never go to a 2.7 hilux or a diesel now after driving my ute they are just too painfully slow, plus the falcon is alot more comfortable as a daily

dont get a v6 hilux unless you have a dump load of money for petrol.
i use about 25l/h and do brake pads every 5000.
that is also driving it nicer than my xr8

the v6 hilux chews through petrol like crazy I have a dual cab 05 sr5 diesel marvelous car never faulted but thats a little out of your price range.

I'd prefer the hilux over the falcon any day I have as above sr5 and ba. Just think the hiluxs looks and feel so much better but thats just my opinion.

my mate has a bf egas ute with a locking diff with the extra ground clearance RTV, he reckons its the best thing since sliced bread.

Anyone with half a brain would buy a Turbo diesel Hilux. Proven reliability.

But I'd buy Falocn Ute. Coz its my money and thats what I'd prefer to drive.

Depends on what you are carting and if you still want day to day driveability. Hilux/Ranger/Colarado/etc are a harsher ride and do not have as much room as the falcon for long drives. But it is better at carrying heavier equipment. That being said, the falcon is a great drive, and you can get it with a tray or cab. The tray is better if you are looking at carting heavier goods. It comes with 1 tonne suspension.

Rtv ute will get you out of nearly any sticky situation. Great for towing torque filled machine. I know a guy that bought ten for his business in Adelaide tried to bog it on a work and couldn't. Built falcon tough.

styleside vs tray; you can't lock a tray, so make sure your toolboxes are bolted down and lockable. otherwise get a styleside with hard tonneau cover that's lockable.

Just out of interest, did you know the only true one tonner is a Mitsi Triton?

Heard that from a bloke who distributes pallets around the city on utes and he has to know the payloads of all the utes for insurance purposes.

Reckons most of them are rated at about 750kg.

Back to this topic, I would contest a 20k Falcon might cost you a bit more to own than a Toyota - I'm sure most agree that Falcons seem to wear out a bit faster than Toyotas do...

For me I just accept that I have to pay a bit more fixing stuff coz I love driving it!

I have been told this as well, certainly the old model triton anyway. I did a short stint as a courier driver (mainly fork on, fork off pallets) and I was given a mitsu triton 2.4l 4-cyl manual single cab 2x4 trayback, apparently they're not only the only true one tonner, apparently, but also have the longest tray (2.4m? 2.6m?) which allows for headboard, tailgate and two pallets. Most utes apparently fall just short of the two pallet mark. (1.15m or something? for a pallet) And also they're the only ones where the factory will warranty LPG installs on the 4-cyl models. Also apparently.

Hey, check out the Herald Sun today, there is a BF XR6 ute in there with a photo of it, looks good and I think they are asking about $15,000 by memory. Can't remember if it is auto or manual though. It has been in the last 3 Fridays carsguide, so there might be some room for negotiation.

imo mate i shopped around for like 12mnths for a work ute and at the end of the day go and buy wat u like i almost bought a 4x4 hilux turbo diesel and it was painfully slow you can pretty much forget about darting into the traffic flow in it unless ur willing to cause an accident, and if u dont buy a car u like and arent happy with it it would be a waste of money because u will only want to get rid of it, my best adice would to be go and test drive a whole range of cars and buy what u feel comfortable in

Base Hilux workmate is like being in an XF GL ute.
Wind up windows, 2 speed wipers, vinyl seats and floor, no tacho, bouncy ride, 6ft long shifter, rear drum brakes, basic seat adjustment.
Pretty bloody ordinary when compared to a Falcon or Commo Ute.
